St. Mary Catholic Church of Kirby, OH began as a station of New Riegel, OH. It was served as a station from 1860 to 1865. In 1864, land was donated to the Catholics of Kirby and they began building a church. The church was completed in 1865 and they became a mission of St. Peter of Upper Sandusky. Priests from St. Peter served the church until 1874, when for one year they served as a mission of Bucyrus. In 1875, St. Mary received its first resident pastor, Father Joseph Rosenberg.
In 1891, the Catholics of Kirby finished building their second church. In 1931, it was severely damaged by a hurricane that struck during the Good Friday services. The church was repaired and is still in use today.
In 1976, Kirby became a sister parish of Upper Sandusky and one pastor serves both.
