St. Joseph Catholic Church (Galion, Ohio) - MS 827 mf
Introduction | Agency History | Order of Microfilming
The records of St. Joseph Catholic Church 1854-2001, which include St. Patrick Catholic Church (1873 - 1953), were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403, in February 2001, with the cooperation of Father Mike Schelling of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Frank Beier of the Catholic Diocese of Toledo, Ohio.
The collection consists of baptisms*, first communions, confirmations, marriages*, deaths/interments. One roll consists of cemetery plot records 1888 - 2000. Due to inconsistencies in pagination and transcription of data, researchers are encouraged to refer to all volumes within each series. Some of these records are in Latin or German.
This register and this collection were prepared by Jennifer Golis in February 2001.
*There is a seventy (70) year access restriction on baptism and marriage records. No restrictions apply to the remainder of this collection.
St. Joseph Catholic Church was formed in 1854. The congregation was primarily composed of German-speaking members with a few English-speaking members throughout the parish. In 1871, these English-speaking members broke from St. Joseph and formed St. Patrick Catholic Church.
The same pastor served St. Patrick until 1900, when they received their first resident pastor. In 1953, St. Joseph and St. Patrick Catholic Churches were reunited.
There have been two cemeteries that have served St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Patrick Catholic Church. The first one was purchased in 1859 and it remained in use until 1888. In 1888, the parish purchased ten acres from the Galion Cemetery Association. Both churches are still using this site for burials.
