 Introduction

The records of St. Stephen Catholic Church, 1898-2000, were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections in November 2000, with the cooperation Father Frank Eckart of St. Stephen Catholic Church and Frank Beier of the Catholic Diocese of Toledo, Ohio.

The collection consists of baptisms*, first communions, confirmations, marriages*, and deaths.

Due to inconsistencies in pagination and transcription of data, researchers are encouraged to refer to all volumes within each series.

This register and this collection were prepared by John McWatters in December 2000.

*There is a seventy (70) year access restriction on baptism and marriage records. No restrictions apply to the remainder of this collection.

 Agency History

The St. Stephen Parish was established in October 1898 to serve Hungarians in the Birmingham neighborhood. The church was dedicated in 1899, with St Stephen School opening that same year. In 1908, a fire destroyed both church and school, but a second church was completed before the end of the year. That church was torn down, and the present church built, in 1914. The present school was dedicated in 1924. St. Stephen Parish was clustered with Holy Rosary and Sacred Heart in 1996.
