Introduction
The records of Millwrights and Piledrivers Local Union 1393 of Toledo, Ohio were donated to the Center for Archival Collections
in November 1997 through the cooperation of Mr. Dwight Smith, Business Manager of Local 1393, and Kristin Dusseau, graduate
archives assistant, in 1997. Literary and property rights have been dedicated to the public and duplication is permitted for
the purpose of preservation and scholarly research.
The records of Millwrights and Piledrivers 1393 includes one half linear feet of By- laws, District Council minutes, strike
photographs, printed histories of the union, correspondence, and newspaper clippings, dating from the union's inception in
1944 to 1994. These records are scattered.
Agency History
The Millwrights and Piledrivers began with a group of men, and their desire to form a new local union in Toledo. After petitioning
the General President of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, they received a charter on December
13, 1944. In the early years of its development, the union struggled to maintain stability. By 1964, Harold Hauter was elected
the Business Agent for Local 1393 and the union was thriving.
Millwrights and Piledrivers has grown into a fine and productive union since 1944. According to the history printed for their
twenty-fifth anniversary: "In the ensuing years we have become apprentice oriented and have continually strove to upgrade
our journeymen in the new methods of the trade because our trade changes with the times, and we cannot stand still."
Currently, Millwrights and Piledrivers Local Union 1393 is located at 1217 Prouty Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43609. Further inquiry
about Local 1393 made be made to Dwight Smith, Business Manager.
Scope and Content
The collection of the Millwrights and Piledrivers Local Union 1393, while limited, is important for its documentation of the
rise of a local union in northwest Ohio. The records are scattered from 1944 to 1994, with the bulk of the material dating
from the 1940s to the 1970s.
Most important to the researcher, are the revision drafts of the by-laws, dating from 1960 with the original draft, to 1978
and the final draft. Through these subsequent drafts, the interplay between a local union and the National Executive Board
of Carpenters becomes evident. Similarly, the job referral procedures are important in documenting the way in which a local
Building and Trades Union handles on the job concerns, and the system of checks the union implements in order to divide up
jobs equally among its members.
While the strength of the collection lies in its documentation of union procedures and laws, the researcher might find the
original charter application, correspondence concerning the chartering of the Millwrights, and the printed histories that
supplement these records helpful in documenting the rise of a prominent labor organization in Toledo, Ohio. Completing the
collection are interesting photographs of the local's strike of the Sohio company, and printed programs of their anniversary
celebration.
