Introduction

The Warren Russell Papers collection consists of 1.25 linear feet of quartermaster papers and forms related to the 2nd Brigade, First Division, 11th Army Corps during the Civil War, primarily 1863 and 1864.

The material was transferred to the Center for Archival Collections through the cooperation of Don and Dorothy Alexander of Pemberville, Ohio on December 4, 1997. No restrictions exist on the use of this collection. Duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The collection was processed and register prepared by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts in September 2001.

Agency History

The Warren Russell Papers consist primarily of the quartermaster records of the 2nd Brigade, First Division of the 11th Army Corps during 1863 and 1864 of the Civil War. The material comes from the personal records of Warren Russell, Assistant Quartermaster to the Brigade.

The 2nd Brigade, First Division of the 11th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac consisted of state volunteer regiments including the 25th 55th, 73rd, 75, 82nd, and 107th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiments, as well as units from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. It also included Battery K of the 1st Ohio Artillery, and the 6th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. The 11th Army Corps was created on September 12, 1862 and was transferred to the Department of the Cumberland on Sept. 25, 1863. The Corps was discontinued on April 14, 1864 and merged into the reorganized 20th Army Corps, Dept. of the Cumberland.

Some of the battles in which this division participated during the time period covered in the Russell Papers included Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.

Scope and Content

The Warren Russell papers represent records typical of a Civil War army Quartermaster, dealing specifically with the logistical functions of keeping the 2nd Brigade, First Division, 11th Army Corps supplied.

The variety of forms demonstrate the official documents and level of paperwork involved in the behind the scenes aspects of the war effort, including accounting for civilian labor, forage, equipment and stores, clothing, and payroll.

The specific orders in this collection are orders delegated to Russell with a specific action in mind. These orders focus on the movement of men and material, providing horses, transporting equipment and baggage, and also in assignments of Russell to particular locations.

The stores and supplies included in this collection are extremely useful to the identification of the clothing, ordnance, and other stores necessary to the sustenance of the army. Specifically, a record can be found of clothing, ordnance, ammunition, and horses available to the units in the brigade.
