The records of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Wood County Barracks #71 of the Veterans of World War I of the U.S.A., Inc., cover the period from 1965 to 1985. There is one third of a linear foot of minutes, correspondence, and miscellaneous Auxiliary material.
The records of the Auxiliary were donated to the Center for Archival Collections by the Wood County Public Library in May 1994. Literary and property rights have been dedicated to the public and duplication is permitted for the purpose of preservation and research. This register was prepared in July 1994 by Paul Buckingham, archival assistant.
Little information is available on the history of the national organization. By back-dating from the 25th National Convention in 1977, it seems the National Auxiliary was formed around 1952. The Ladies Auxiliary to the Wood County Barracks #71 of the Veterans of World War I of the U.S.A., Inc. was formed on September 3, 1965 when the members of Barracks #71 invited their wives to form an auxiliary. No further information is known although it is likely that by this time [1994] the auxiliary has disbanded.
The Ladies Auxiliary to the Wood County Barracks #71 of the Veterans of World War I of the U.S.A., Inc. minutes are the most comprehensive series in this collection. They span the period from the founding of the Auxiliary in 1965 up to 1985 with 1977-1978 missing. All other parts of this collection are incomplete. Membership lists can be compiled from the membership cards and the installation certificates.
The correspondence files are poor and there are no financial records on this collection. There is some material from the National and Departmental organization. This also is very limited including only by-laws, directories, and the proceedings of one convention.
