Agency History

In 1938, a junior literary organization branched off from the Hoytville Senior Ladies Literary Club. After a few name changes, the members called themselves the Hoytville Junior Ladies Literary Club. However, by 1959/1960, the Club finally settled on the name, Hoytville Ladies Literary Club. The club belonged to the Ohio Federation of Women until 1986 at which time it withdrew due to a dwindling number of club members and the subsequent inability to actively contribute to the state organization.

The motto of the Hoytville Ladies Literary Club was "Seekers of Knowledge, Lovers of Learning." The purpose of the club was to bring cultural enrichment to both its members and the community. Monthly meetings contained an informative presentation by either a club member or a guest speaker. Other activities sponsored by the club were the performance of small plays and skits, singing performances, and reading sessions.

Scope and Content

The materials of the Hoytville Ladies Literary Club date from 1916 - 1992. The collection consists of club programs, newspaper clippings, readings, and photographs.

The majority of the collection consists of the club yearbooks from 1943/1944 - 1991/1992. The yearbooks include the club oath, list of officers, list of members, and topics of monthly meetings. The collection also consists of a small amount of reading materials such as plays and poetry, as well as newspaper clippings and photographs. The major shortfall of the collection is the lack of meeting minutes and a more detailed club history.
