Introduction

The collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections through the cooperation of Berneda Foreman of Napoleon, Ohio starting in the spring of 1991 with the final donation on September 12, 1997 at the time the club disbanded. No restrictions exist on the use of this collection. Duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The register was compiled by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts in 1997 and revised in April 2004.

Agency History

Part of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs, District 1, the Country Posey Garden Club was one of a group of clubs in Henry County including groups in Liberty Center, Holgate, and Florida, which formed the Henry County Unit of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs. The Spade and Trowel Garden Club in Florida was the first established in 1938. Country Posey Garden Club was the second established group, founded in 1947 and affiliated with the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs in 1948. Due to a decline in membership, the Country Posey Garden Club was disbanded in the fall of 1997.

Scope and Content

The records of the Country Posey Garden Club document the history and activities of the Henry County women's group from 1947 to 1997 when the club disbanded. The records include a full series of minutes, which include membership and financial information, scattered correspondence which illustrates the variety of projects in the community through thank-you notes as well as the network of cooperation between other garden clubs in Henry County. There is also a series of correspondence and other communications with the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs, of which Country Posey was a member in District 1. In addition, the collection includes a series of the annual program booklets of the club, and a couple of scrapbooks with photographs and clippings, all of which illustrate the scope of activities and friendships shared in the club.
