Introduction

The Bowling Green State University Creative Writing Program Alumni Papers have been gathered from the manuscript contributions of BGSU's MFA alumni. The first contributions include the MFA thesis and manuscript of alumna Judith Dunaway, donated by alumna Susan Carol Hauser in August 2004. She and other alumni have donated books and periodicals in which their work has appeared, and these have been added to the book and periodical holdings of BGSU's Rare Books and Special Collections. Manuscript material will be added to this collection as contributions arrive. Researchers bear the responsibility for securing copyright permission for copying and quoting from unpublished manuscripts. The finding aid was prepared by Lee McLaird, Curator of Rare Books and Special Collections, in December 2006.

Historical Notes

The Bowling Green State University Creative Writing Program was founded in 1968 by Frederick F. Eckman and Philip F. O'Connor of the Department of English. Similar to the program at the University of Iowa, its purpose was to train young writers of poetry and fiction in their craft by intensive small-group work and exposure to writers of national note brought to campus to teach in-residence or through lecture/reading. The first Master of Fine Arts degree in English (later Creative Writing) was awarded in 1969, which allowed many graduates of the program to pursue academic careers after graduation. The creative theses of these graduates are cataloged in the main library collection at Bowling Green State University. Eventually, an accompanying undergraduate program was established, awarding a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Biographical Notes

Judith Dunaway MFA 1976. A poet who pursued an academic career, she published occasional chapbooks of her poetry in small issue numbers. Deceased.

Hauser, Susan Carol. MFA 1973. An essayist and poet and teacher of writing in the English Department at Bemidji State University in northern Minnesota.

Scope and Content

It is intended that this collection gather manuscript material from alumni. Publications in non-manuscript format will be added to the Creative Writing Program Collection of the Rare Books and Special Collections Division of Bowling Green State University. Although theses may be included, these are available elsewhere in the University Libraries collections. The manuscripts will be arranged by the name of the alumnus, then arranged as the collection warrants it.
