Introduction
The records of Portage Grange #2122, Portage Township, Wood County, Ohio, consist of approximately .5 linear ft. of minutes,
a roll book, and a dues account book, dating from 1918 through 1969.
The collection was transferred to the Center for Archival Collections during April 1988 from the Wood County Historical Museum.
This register was prepared by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts, Center for Archival Collections, June, 1989. No restrictions
exist on the the use of this collection.
Agency History
The Grange, organized on a national, state, county, and local level, combines fraternity, ritual, and business with cultural
and educational programs. Women have been admitted from the beginning as equal members, and a juvenile grange promotes total
family participation in this organization.
The Portage Grange was formed around July of 1918. By 1967 the Grange membership had dropped to the point where it was decided
to sell the Grange Hall to pay off debts made when it was built. The building, possibly located in North Baltimore, was sold
for $5000, in July, 1967.
Scope and Content
This collection of Grange records will prove useful to those researchers interested in agricultural and rural studies. While
the minutes are incomplete, they provide information on officers, membership, dues, programs, and business conducted. However,
this information is in more of an outline format than narrative and thus lacks great detail. The roll book provides information
on members, their addresses, and occupations. The dues account book only gives information on members names and whether their
quarterly dues were paid.
