Introduction

The Rev. Edwin E. Rogers Papers, consist of seminary notebooks from Union Theological Seminary, a scrapbook, loose papers, and nearly 400 handwritten sermons, produced by Dr. Rogers between 1878 and 1915.

The collection was transferred to the Center for Archival Collections during April 1988 from the Wood County Historical Museum. This register was prepared by Marilyn Levin son, Curator of Manuscripts, Center for Archival Collections, May, 1989. No restrictions exist on the use of this collection.

Biographical Sketch

Edwin E. Rogers, former pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green, Ohio, was born on September 19, 1853 on a farm near South Wallingford, Vermont. After graduating in 1881 from Union Theological Seminary with the degree of Doctor of Divinity, he served as pastor for a number of congregations: Hammonton, N.J., 1881-83; Allen State Church, New York City, 1883-86; East Hardwick, Vt., 1886-87; Church of the Covenant, New York City, 1887-88; Zanesville, Ohio, 1880-97; Columbus, Ohio, 1899-1901; and Bowling Green, Ohio, 1901-1920.

Rogers was first married on August 9, 1887 to Mary Hulbert. They had two children, but both died early. Late in life, on March 24, 1919, he married Maude Raydure. He was left a partially paralyzed invalid after a fall in his home in December 1921. He died in Bowling Green, Ohio on September 24, 1937 and was buried in South Wallingford, Vermont.

Scope and Content

The papers of Rev. Edwin E. Rogers consist of nearly 3 linear feet of handwritten sermons, seminary notebooks, a scrapbook of a world tour, and loose papers, covering the period from 1878 until 1915. As the work of a Presbyterian minister active at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the collection provides insight into traditional religious life and views.

The sermons, which are the largest segment of the collection, primarily deal with common religious subjects. The few topical sermons are on such issues as temperance, patriotism, and missionary work. One of the more interesting items in the collection is the scrapbook of newspaper clippings of letters sent to the Bowling Green Daily Sentinel-Tribune by Rogers during a tour of the world 1909-1910, including impressions of Japan, Korea and Manchuria, China, Hong Kong, Burma, India, Egypt, Palestine, and Europe. The compiler of the scrapbook is unknown; it was donated to the collection separately by Marilyn Valentine.
