Introduction

The Kathryn Zeigler Jeska Papers date from 1936 to 1940 and include a scrapbook, an account ledger, and photographs. The Papers were donated to the Center for Archival Collections in March 1984, through the cooperation of Mrs. Jeska and Ann Bowers, Assistant Director.

Literary and property rights have been donated to the public and duplication is permitted for purposes of preservation and scholarly research. The register was prepared by Krista Hilinski, student assistant, in January 1998.

Biographical Sketch

Kathryn Zeigler was born in Swanton, Ohio. She began attending Bowling Green State University in the fall of 1936. During her four years at the University she was an active member in the Home Economics Club, the Concert Band, the Women's Athletic Association, and the Three Kay Sorority. She graduated on June 10, 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.

After graduation, she returned to Swanton and married Elmer Jeska. They had three children. She taught Home Economics in Swanton, retiring in 1974. She was active in the Progress Club, the Swanton Garden Club, the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau Council and the Ohio Genealogical Society. Kathryn died on May 27, 1994.

Scope and Content

The scrapbook, account ledger and photographs comprising the Kathryn Zeigler Jeska Papers document her life while at student at Bowling Green State University between 1936 and 1940.

The scrapbook includes newspaper clippings, music and theater programs, sorority invitations and favors, cards from dances, postcards and letters, and documents from several Home Economics Conferences she attended while in college. The scrapbook provides information on the social life of Kathryn Jeska and the organizations in which she was involved.

The photographs visually document Bowling Green State University and the life of a student during the time period, 1936-1940. Included are scenes of university buildings and grounds, candid shots of her friends and sorority sisters, the inauguration of President Offenhauer, summer vacation to Catawba Island with some sorority sisters and other social functions.

The account ledger provides a monthly records of her expenditures and income while a college student. Also documented are inventories of her canned goods, expenses for the Three Kay Sorority and detailed food accounts.

All together these documents provide a detailed and interesting student view of university life at Bowling Green State University during the last half of the 1930s. The Papers would be of interest to those researching student life and higher education and women's history.
