Introduction

The records of the Northwest Ohio Volunteer Firemen's Association is an active collection of the records and publications of a regional support organization for members of the fire-fighting profession in Northwest Ohio.

Donation of material to the Center for Archival Collections first began in September 1983 through the cooperation of Walter F. Miller, Robert L. Marihugh, Robert Warnimont, Myrl Meller, Sam Bohm and others, with continuing additions over the years. Duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The collection was processed and register prepared by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts in April 2005. Future additions will be similarly added to the collection and the finding aid adjusted accordingly.

Agency History

Founded in 1874, the Northwest Ohio Volunteer Firemen's Association has been providing educational, legislative, and fraternal support for fire-fighters in the region for more than a century, with annual conventions and "tournaments" as part of their activities.

As stated in the text of the Constitution and By-laws of the Northwest Ohio Volunteer Firemen's Association, the "object of this Association shall be to create and maintain a brotherly and fraternal feeling by banding together such volunteer, part-paid, paid firemen as may be carried on the rolls of fire companies or fire departments to work for the education of its members in the advancement of their chosen duty of fire fighting, fire prevention and rescue work; to hold a convention annually for the promotion of friendship among the members; and to seek protection for firemen and their dependents through adequate legislation".

Scope and Content

The Northwest Ohio Volunteer Firemen's Association collection presents an ongoing look at the operation and activities of a professional organization which has been involved with local volunteer fire departments in Northwest Ohio since the last quarter of the 19th century.

The bulk of the collection centers on the annual convention and "tournament" activities of the organization, largely represented by the convention proceedings and the annual yearbooks, but there is also considerable attention paid to the educational function of the NOVFA. There are programs from the various "Fire School" events as well as a selection of textbooks used to keep fire-fighters informed of the latest techniques and problems in the field.

Another topical grouping provides information on many of the individual local departments in the NOVFA region, ranging from small flyers or newsclippings to more extensive histories, some recognizing a century of service to their respective communities.

Since the collection is an active, growing one, additional material will be added as received.
