Introduction
The Annie Turnbull Panning Collection dates from 1905 to 1982. The collection contains materials documenting her life, the
majority of which covers her years in the Women's Army Corps. Included in this material are books, scrapbooks, photographs,
personal and military correspondence and a few personal family items.
The collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections in 1982 with the cooperation of Ms. Mary Bence and Mrs.
Beatrice Sears. No restrictions exist on the research use of this collection and duplication is permitted for the purposes
of preservation and scholarly research. The collection was processed and the register drafted by Susan Hagemeyer in November
1983.
Biographical Sketch
Annie Laurie Turnbull Panning was born near Keswick, England, on May 3, 1902. Sometime before January 1943, she moved to Massachusetts.
In February 1943, Annie was called to active duty and reported to the 2nd WAC Training Center, Daytona Beach, where she received
training as a cook. By May of that year, she was stationed with the 749 WAC Unit at Keesler Field, Mississippi.
In May 1945 Annie Turnbull arrived at Le Havre, France to begin her European tour of duty. While there, she went on several
side trips to Switzerland, Italy, England, and the Riviera. Annie was moved to Bremerhaven, Germany in 1946 and in 1947, she
returned to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. While still in the military, she married Cpl. Albert H. Panning on October 16, 1948.
Her discharge was completed in March 1949.
Annie and her husband moved to Toledo early in 1949 and later purchased a home at 616 Mayfair. Using military benefits, she
attended Tri State University from 1949 to 1951. In July 1954, Annie filed for divorce. She moved several times within Toledo
and was active in the American Legion as well as WAC organizations. She died December 5, 1982, after spending time in a nursing
home.
Scope and Content
The main focus of the Annie Turnbull Panning Collection is the wealth of material concerning the Women's Army Corps from 1943
to 1949. Extensive newsclippings and magazine articles concerning the WACs at a national level as well as more individually
oriented clippings from regular Army Base publications along with many photographs taken while Annie was on active duty make
up the bulk of the collection. The largest group of photographs, taken during her European tour of duty (1945-1947) provide
visual documentation of the effects of World War II on the people and the cities of Europe. Unfortunately, many of the photographs,
while identified, are not clearly explained, and this lack of written documentation does leave unanswered questions.
Also included in the collection are Annie's wedding pictures, several books on women in the military and personal family items.
This collection does provide good documentation of one woman's experiences during World War II while serving in the military.
