Introduction

The records of the Sun Grain Association, Risingsun, Ohio, were loaned to the Center for Archival Collections for microfilming by Mr. Kenneth E. Hohman with the assistance of Sandra Davies, graduate assistant, on April 21, 1982. The records, dating from 1912 to 1954, consist primarily of Board of Directors meeting minutes, annual stockholers meeting minutes and stock registers.

Literary and property rights of the microfilm edition of this collection have been dedicated to the public and duplication is permitted for the purpose of scholarly research. The register was compiled by Ann Bowers, Curator of Manuscripts, in June 1982.

Agency History

The Sun Grain Association was incorporated as the Farmers Commercial Grain and Seed Company, Risingsun, Ohio, in May 1912. Its purpose according to the articles of incorporation was for the "dealing in hay, grain, flour, seeds and such other articles as are usually connected with a general grain business." The first Board of Directors consisted of George Phillips, John Bower, A. J. Day. George Roush, W. H. Mann, F. E. Bernard, S. S. Shaw, William Myers, and D. S. Loe. The records were kept and meetings held at the W. E. Bates Store in Risingsun.

The name of the company was changed to the Sun Grain Association with the adoption of new bylaws in January 1931. The company continues to operate under the Sun Grain name out of Risingsun, Ohio.

Scope and Content

The records of the Sun Grain Association, Risingsun, Ohio, consist primarily of minutes. The Board of Directors minutes (1912-1949) outline the business conducted by the company. Unfortunately, the minutes are not detailed; of much more use to the researcher would be the operating reports given at these meetings. These reports, however, are not included in this collection. Also of interest are the minutes of the annual stockholders meetings (1913-1953). These minutes also just outline the business conducted without providing great detail.

The articles of incorporation and original constitution/bylaws establish the procedures by which the company operates. The stock registers (1912-1954) provide a listing of stockholders and the amount of stock sold. Overall this collection documents in a general manner an early-established and still on-going grain elevator association and will prove useful to the agricultural historian.
