Introduction
The records of the Goldstein-Goodman Post #6909, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Toledo, Ohio include minutes, record books,
scrapbooks, and printed material documenting this veterans' community service organization.
The records donated to the Center for Archival Collections in 1981 with additional material in April 1995 with the cooperation
of Jack Bustow, Lew Malkin, and Sidney Levinson. There are no restrictions on the research use of this collection and duplication
is permitted for purposes of preservation and scholarly research. The register was prepared by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of
Manuscripts in April 2004.
Agency History
The Goldstein-Goodman Post #6909, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Toledo, Ohio, was established on May 2, 1946 as a service organization
made up of Jewish veterans. The Post was named for Morris Goldstein, killed during the Battle of Leyte Gulf on November 12,
1944, and Barnett H. Goodman who was killed on a bombing mission over Germany on July 29, 1943. With a stated dedication to
community service, the Post initiated regular projects in aid of St. Anthony's Villa, Miami Children's Home, and the Sunshine
Children's Home, support for the aged, the handicapped, and retarded children, and grave decoration for veterans on Memorial
Day. Most activities were during the decades of the 1960s and 1970s, with participation dwindling as Post membership declined.
Scope and Content
The record of the Goldstein-Goodman Post #6909, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Toledo, Ohio documents the activities of a community
service veterans' organization in Toledo, Ohio from its founding in 1946 through the early 1980s, as membership and participation
declined.
The most complete record series is a run of minutes from the establishment of the Post on May 2, 1946 through the 1970s. These
minutes document discussion of post operations, social activities, community activities, and financial matters.
The scrapbooks, dating from 1957 through 1981, illustrate many of the service projects undertaken by the Post, especially
involvement with St. Anthony's Villa, Miami Children's Home, and the Sunshine Children's Home, support for the aged, the handicapped,
and retarded children, school projects with Lagrange School, and grave decoration for veterans on Memorial Day Some scrapbooks
were submitted in statewide competition, placing as high as second two different years.
