Introduction
The records of the Bricklayers International Union, Local 35, Lima, Ohio, span the years 1915 to 1956. The collection largely
consists of minute books and dues ledgers. Included within these volumes is information about membership, including journeymen
and apprentices, statistics referring to the financial status of those individuals and the Local in general. The names of
Union Local officers and stewards are identified throughout the records.
This collection was donated and transferred to the Center for Archival Collections in November 1979 by Robert H. Mills, the
current secretary of Local 35. No restrictions exist on the use of these records and duplication is permitted for the purpose
of preservation and scholarly research. The collection was processed and the register prepared in June 1988 by Stephen C.
Young who was employed as a manuscript processor through a grant provided by the Ohio Historical Society.
Agency History
The Bricklayers International Union, Local 35 is based in Lima, Allen County, Ohio, but also served the three adjoining counties
of Auglaize, Mercer, and Van Wert. Local 35 received its charter on 5 September 1898 and has been in continual operation since
then. Membership numbers fluctuated during the early 20th century, being greater during the 1920s and 1940s. Although fully
organized with a president and vice president, a correspondence and financial secretary, a treasurer, and other officers,
local 35 was subordinate to the Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterer's International Union which was based in Indianapolis, Indiana.
As evidenced by the Minute Books in this collection, the Local 35 Union officers met almost weekly from 1915 to 1927. In 1979
the meetings were scheduled twice a month, serving 102 journeymen and seven apprentices.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of only a few scattered items of correspondence, two volumes of weekly meeting minutes (1915-1927)
and two dues ledgers (1923-1928, 1943-1947).
The correspondence contains information about financial matters within the Local, and resolutions and charges regarding violations
of unionized labor employment. Some items deal with the trades, and with labor and management communication within the Lima
community. Of special note is a circular from the International Office in Indianapolis, announcing a nationwide campaign to
increase membership in the Women's International Union Label League during 1925.
The minute books very clearly record the basic issues which concerned Local 35 of the Bricklayers' Union. These include fair
employment practices, union employment, hours, wages, pensions, and audit reports. It is also quite evident that the Local
kept abreast of state and national labor-related matters. The initiation of new members and the results of Local elections
also are contained in these books.
Each of the two ledger books is prefaced by an alphabetical index and record of the dues paid by individual members, as well
as fines, and credits. Personal information, including age, date of initiation, and name and relationship of beneficiary is
also recorded. Often a remarks column will record to which Local a member may have moved.
