Alexander Sankey Latty (1815-1895), son of Robert Latty and Anne Alexander, was born on June 30, 1815, in Leitrim County, Ireland. In 1833, at the age of eighteen,
he immigrated to Montreal, Canada. There he took part in the Mackenzie Rebellion, 1837, (an ill-fated adventure in land and
political reform; crushed with a British military intervention) and was forced to flee to the United States. He first went
to New York and then to the Maumee River basin in 1837, where he oversaw the construction of section 30 of the Miami and Wabash
Canal. During this time he resided around the Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio area. There in 1840 he was admitted to the Ohio
Bar, one of his examiners was Morrison R. Waite, (later Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court) and later that same
year Alexander moved to New Rochester, Paulding County, Ohio, at that time the county seat.
The county seat was moved to Charloe in 1841 and Alexander and his wife Eliza Melia, daughter of Anne Melia, made the move
with the county government. Alexander and Eliza were the parents of four children, two of whom died in infancy, Alexander
Sankey Latty and Robert Emmet Latty. Daughter Anna Maria Latty (1844-1871) went on to marry Joseph Ice (1835-1888) and son
Emmet Sankey Latty (1845-1871) married Eugenia McCormick, but he died shortly after their marriage in 1871. Eliza Melia Latty,
wife of Alexander, died on March 15, 1853, after long suffering the ill effects of consumption.
Paulding Center (later Paulding) became the county seat in 1850 and Alexander and family once again made the move. In 1851
Paulding Township was organized and "A.S. Latty" cast one of the seventeen ballots at the first election, held in the schoolhouse
at Paulding. In March 1844 Alexander became the third auditor of Paulding County and retained that position until 1856. Paulding
County's first newspaper, The Age of Progress, established by P.W. Hardesty in 1853, was purchased by Latty and renamed The
Democrat. A couple of years later Alexander sold the paper to J.D. Baker who changed the name to The Republican and removed
it to Defiance, Ohio.

After the death of his first wife Alexander remarried to Rebecca Stratton (1833-1919), from Columbiana County, Ohio, on September
13, 1856. This union produced three children, Florence Alexandria Latty (1859-1906), Clara Emily Latty (1863-1943), and Edwin
Alexander Latty (1865-1937). Florence married Livingston Babcock Peaslee (1851-1914) on December 5, 1877 and had one child
Alexander Sankey Latty Peaslee (1878-1974).
In October 1856 Alexander was elected on the Whig ticket as Common Pleas Judge of the second subdivision of the third district,
comprising at that time of Defiance, Fulton, Henry, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert, Williams and Wood Counties; beating Democratic
candidate Francis C. LeBlond by around 100 votes. He was re-elected to that office in 1861, 1866 and 1871, later becoming
a Republican candidate, and holding the office for twenty years before retiring from the bench in February 1877. The Bryan
Press reported on May 28, 1874, the following anecdotal story about Judge Latty:
As a juryman was walking along the street last Monday the wind caught his new palmleaf hat, sent it whirling through the air
for a moment and finally hung it in triumph on the courthouse lightning rod. Judge Latty issued a writ of habeas corpus and
directed the sheriff to bring the flighty member into court. The sheriff, after making several unsuccessful attempts to get
possession of the hat, returned the writ, stating he was unable to execute it. The Judge then issued a writ if mandamus, ordering
the hat to come down and appear in his presence. This the sheriff took and, having climbed to the top of the cupola, was just
getting ready to read, when a guest of wind removed the hat from its elevated position and carried it to the ground, thus
relieving the court from any embarrassment that might arise from seeing its authority set at naught.
In 1861 the Judge and his family moved from Paulding to Defiance where they had constructed a large pretentious home at 718
Perry Street.
Judge Latty served as secretary of the Paulding and Cecil Railroad Company from 1881 until 1884, when the company was sold
to the Cincinnati, Van Wert and Michigan Railway (later the New York Central Railroad). He also served as president of the
Defiance Gas Works during the early 1880s. During this time he owned and operated a law firm in Defiance with several associates;
one of whom was his son-in-law Livingston B. Peaslee. In 1882 the village of Latty was laid out at the junction of the Mackinaw
and Nickle Plate Railroads on land owned by Alexander and named for him. Governor Joseph Foraker appointed him one of the
three canal commissioners in 1883. Latty Township in Paulding County was named after him and Camp Latty, the rendezvous point
for the 68th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in Napoleon, Ohio, during the Civil War was named in his honor.
Judge Alexander Sankey Latty died at noon on Thursday, May 30, 1895, at his home in Defiance, Ohio. He was laid to rest in
Riverside Cemetery in Defiance. The Defiance Democrat eulogized "he was a good man and the entire community deeply regret
his death."

Rebecca Stratton Latty (1833-1919) was the second wife of Alexander Sankey Latty to whom she married on September 13, 1856. She was the seventh child and fourth
daughter, born on April 21, 1833, in Columbiana County, Ohio, to Quaker parents, Aaron Stratton (1799-1861) and Hannah Townsend
(1800-1878). The Aaron and Hannah Townsend Stratton family was as follows: Lewis (1822-1827), Joel (1824-1906), Emily Stratton
Holmes (1825-1902), Edwin (1827-1831), Rachel Stratton Adams (1829-1862), Martha (1831-1860), Lydia (1835-1860), Jerusha Stratton
Jenkins (1837- ), Sina (1840-1901), Louise Stratton Ice (1842-1927) and John Whittier Stratton (1845-1930). Rebecca was an
avid correspondent writing to her children and grandchild along with her many siblings. In her early youth in the 1850s she
taught in the Paulding County schools. Later in life after the death of her husband she donated the land for the Paulding
County Carnegie Library. She resided in the Latty residence on 718 Perry Street in Defiance until her death on February 23,
1919.
Louise Stratton Ice (1842-1927) was the eighth daughter and eleventh child of Aaron and Hannah Townsend Stratton. She was born in Columbiana County, Ohio,
on April 5, 1842 to a Quaker family. In 1879 she married Captain Joseph Ice (1835-1888) in Paulding County, Ohio. He previously
had been married to Anna Maria Latty (1844-1871), daughter of Alexander Sankey Latty and his first wife Eliza Melia. The couple
had no children and Joseph passed away on February 15, 1888. She was "prominent and active in social and charitable public
affairs" throughout her life. Her family simply called her "Aunt Lou." She died on May 5, 1927, in Columbus, Ohio, but her
remains were laid to rest in the Live Oak Cemetery in Paulding County.
Clara Emily Latty (1863-1943), the second daughter and second child of Alexander and Rebecca Latty, was born on May 6, 1863 in the Latty home in Defiance.
She attended Granville Female College and the New York State Library School. She like her mother was a devoted writer, corresponding
to friends and family. She was a prominent and active member in the Defiance area community. She died on March 27, 1943, after
a year long illness at the place of her birth, 718 Perry Street, in Defiance.
Edwin Alexander Latty (1865-1937) the only son of Alexander Sankey and Rebecca Stratton Latty was born on September 15, 1865. He graduated from Swarthmore
College and like his father entered the legal profession. In 1923 he was elected mayor of Defiance and afterward continued
his law practice. He died on April 7, 1937, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor after undergoing an operation
for his failing liver. He was buried in the family mausoleum in Defiance.
Florence Alexandria Latty Peaslee (1859-1906) born on August 5, 1859, was the first child of Alexander Sankey and Rebecca Stratton Latty. She married Livingston Babcock
Peaslee on December 5, 1877. This union bore one son Alexander Sankey Latty Peaslee. She died after a lingering illness on
Monday, October 22, 1906. She was laid to rest in the family mausoleum in Riverside Cemetery in Defiance, Ohio.
Livingston Babcock Peaslee (1851-1914), husband of Florence Alexandria Latty, was born on August 7, 1851, to Joseph Babcock Peaslee and Magdalena Seeber in New
York. Livingston married Florence on December 5, 1877, and soon after formed a legal partnership with his father-in-law, Alexander
Sankey Latty, in December 1877. His many correspondences are to his father and brothers in New York. His siblings are as follows:
Jacob Thomas (1834- ), James Oliver (1838-1866), Isaac Dorman (1840-1907), Mary Elizabeth (1842- ), Delos Seeber (1844- ),
Margaret Eunice (1846-1866), John Smith (1849-1908), Malinda Catherine (1853-1935) and Joseph Albert (1856- ). Livingston
in old age traveled back to New York where he died in 1914 and was buried in Seeber Cemetery, Minden Township, Montgomery
County, New York.
Alexander Sankey Latty Peaslee (1878-1974) was the only child of Livingston Babcock and Florence Alexandria Latty Peaslee. He was born on September 12, 1878, in Defiance.
"Alec" as he was called, attended Kenyon College and entered the awards and plaque business, founding the Trophy-Craft Company.
He married Annie Hazel Brown of Toronto, Canada, daughter of George William Brown and Gavina Gowans, on January 15, 1913.
The couple then went on a three month Mediterranean cruise following their nuptials. Alec and Hazel had three children Florence
Margaret "Peg" (1916-1987) who marred Edward "Bud" Vance, Donald Stratton (1919-1999) and Alexander Sankey (1922-1996). Alexander
S.L. Peaslee died on September 22, 1974. His wife followed him to the grave nine years later on September 15, 1983.
Scope and Content
The Alexander Sankey Latty Family Papers consists of three cubic feet of materials revolving around the Alexander Sankey Latty
family during the mid nineteenth to mid twentieth centuries. Family correspondence makes up a total of 1.3 linear feet of
the collection, while the majority of the remainder of the papers includes legal documents, financial papers and printed materials
spanning across three generations of Lattys.
The correspondence involving Judge Alexander Latty focuses almost exclusively on business and political issues throughout
the mid to late nineteenth century. Business correspondence to J.D. Patton about the Defiance Gas Works in the early 1880s
is a large cohesive section of the Alexander Latty portion of the collection, along with a regular series of letters from
Mellie A. Pittenger describing the early development of the village of Latty, Paulding County, Ohio, during the mid 1880s.
The largest segment of the correspondence consists of family letters to and from Rebecca Stratton Latty, Clara Emily Latty,
Edwin Alexander Latty, Florence Alexandria Latty Peaslee, Livingston Babcock Peaslee and Alexander Sankey Latty Peaslee. These
letters to each other and various other family members relate news as well as business and opinions among immediate and distant
family members. The non-family letters in the collection consist of business associated documents and personal letters to
friends.
The subject files in the collection contain Alexander Latty's canal time book from the late 1830s and early 1840s when he
worked as a canal construction supervisor; Clara Latty's, Edwin Latty's and Alexander Peaslee's school documents; Paulding
County tax records from the early 1850s and photocopies of the Alexander Sankey Latty Papers held in the Library of Congress.
Legal documents in this collection consist in large part of case files involving Alexander Latty, among which is the 1865
case Erasmus D. Peck vs. George Weddell. This important case disputed the Wood County election results in the removal of the
county seat from the village of Perrysburg to village of Bowling Green. The financial documents in this collection are mainly
nonessential bank statements, tax statements and receipts spanning from the 1870s to 1940s. Newspapers editorials about Alexander
Sankey Latty are the most important feature of the printed materials. The clippings predominating in the 1860s are a series
of editorials about Latty and his abilities as judge. Family related clippings including news articles and obituaries are
also included in this area.
The addendum, filed following the main collection, consists of .3 linear feet of materials revolving around the Alexander
Sankey Latty family during the late nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries. Family correspondence makes up most
of the addendum collection, while the remainder of the papers includes literary productions, legal documents, financial papers
and photographs.
The correspondence consists of family letters to and from Rebecca Stratton Latty, Clara Emily Latty, Edwin Alexander Latty,
Livingston Babcock Peaslee and Alexander Sankey Latty Peaslee. These letters to each other and various other family members
relate news as well as business and opinions among immediate and distant family members. The non-family letters in the collection
consist of business associated documents and personal letters to friends.
Legal documents in the addendum consist in large part of the last wills and testaments of Alexander Sankey Latty and Rebecca
Stratton Latty. A premarital indenture from 1856 between Alexander Latty and his future wife Rebecca Stratton it also worth
noting in the addendum collection. Literary productions material includes diaries and personal memoirs of Alexander and Clara
Latty. The financial documents consist of income tax and property tax summaries of the Latty families liabilities in the early
twentieth century. The photographs in the addendum collection are inside shots of the Latty home.
