Introduction
The records of the First Presbyterian Church of Maumee were loaned to the Center for Archival Collections for microfilming.
There are no restrictions on the use of this material.
Agency History
Upon its establishment in 1820, the First Presbyterian Church of Maumee was one of the first in northwest Ohio. In 1826, a
Sunday School was begun under the direction of the church. This congregation has remained in existence continually to the
present.
Scope and Content
The surviving records of the church are composed of three major series. These are the minutes of the Session, the Minutes
of the Board of Trustees, and the records of the Sunday School.
The material includes, in varying degrees of completeness, many lists and statistics pertinent to the history of the church
and the Maumee community. Memberships, baptisms, births, marriages, deaths, church officers, and financial contributors are
all recorded in fairly complete fashion. Statistics on expenditures and attendance are also listed. Miscellaneous information
includes the selection of ministers, the sale of slips, and the construction and maintenance of church buildings. A final
area of importance in the records is religious affairs and the principles upon which the church was founded and governed.
Series Description
MINUTES OF THE SESSION January 9, 1820 - December 9, 1969 Arranged chronologically The Minutes of the Session is the most complete record group of the three series in this collection. Included in the Session
Minutes at varying intervals are lists of members, elected officers, baptisms, births, marriages, deaths, funerals, and ministers.
Also found in these volumes are matters pertaining to the governing of the church and religious beliefs. Another aspect of
the Session Minutes is the procedure followed when adding to membership rolls by conversion and by letter. The minutes of
some weekly and annual congregational meetings also are contained in this group of records. This series often holds information
which might usually be kept by the Board of Trustees or the Sunday School, such as financial statistics, attendance records,
and some annual reports. The Session Minutes should be consulted for this type of information when gaps are encountered in
other series.
MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES January 6, 1851 - January 8, 1900; February 19, 1928 - May 11, 1945 Arranged chronologically The records of the Board of Trustees are generally concerned with the financial business of the church. This material includes
offerings, subscriptions, sale of slips, salary of ministers, missionary funds, and treasurer's reports. Other matters involving
the Board of Trustees are the care of the church building, the minister's home, and the session house. The process of hiring
ministers is also a function of the Board. Records of this type may be found in the Session Minutes when Board of Trustees
Minutes are not available.
RECORDS OF THE PRESBYTERIAN SUNDAY SCHOOL April 6, 1862 - December 27, 1892 Arranged chronologically The records of the Sunday School begin with a brief history of the school which started in 1826. Detailed records begin in
1862. The series includes annual and quarterly reports listing the attendance of both students and teachers, with the names
of teachers often given in full. The selections of superintendents are also contained in the record. Financial statistics
cover the amount of weekly collections and the expenditures of the school. Notations are made when offerings are donated to
outside organizations. Matters pertaining to the school also may be found in the Session Minutes when the series of separate
Sunday School records is not available.
