Introduction

The 13.5 cubic feet of material in the National Weather Service Collection of observation reports was placed on permanent loan with the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes on August 10, 1989. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration retains ownership of the records. No restrictions have been placed on access to their reports. Final processing of the collection was completed in January 1992 by Mark J. Barnes.

No historical information on the Cleveland, Ohio National Weather Service Station was available at the time this collection was processed.

Scope and Content

This collection contains 84 bound volumes of meteorological observations performed at the National Weather Service office in Cleveland, Ohio from 1870 to 1948. The observations range in format from printed forms with handwritten entries to notebooks filled with extensive comments, handwritten or in typescript. The 13.5 cubic feet of volumes record data on wind direction and speed, temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, cloud conditions, and other weather information. Although the reporting formats have similarities, there are seven separate series identified for description due to variations in compilation techniques for daily and monthly reports.

Series Description

REPORTS

DAILY JOURNAL
January 28, 1872-April 30, 1905
Boxes 1-5
Arranged chronologically
Series contains journals for daily weather observations. Weather observers recorded instrument readings at regular intervals each day for such features as relative humidity, barometric pressure, temperature, wind direction and speed, degree of cloud cover, precipitation, and other remarks. The recording format includes lengthy comments written as notebook entries. Each entry through June 30, 1895 is handwritten in ink. Later journals appear in typescript.

RECORD OF TELEGRAPHIC REPORTS

DAILY FORMS 1001, 1002, 1014
1905-1948
Box 8-20
