Introduction
The 13.5 cubic feet of material in the National Weather Service Collection of observation reports was placed on permanent
loan with the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes on August 10, 1989. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
retains ownership of the records. No restrictions have been placed on access to their reports. Final processing of the collection
was completed in January 1992 by Mark J. Barnes.

was processed.
Scope and Content
This collection contains 84 bound volumes of meteorological observations performed at the National Weather Service office
in Cleveland, Ohio from 1870 to 1948. The observations range in format from printed forms with handwritten entries to notebooks
filled with extensive comments, handwritten or in typescript. The 13.5 cubic feet of volumes record data on wind direction
and speed, temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, cloud conditions, and other weather information. Although the reporting
formats have similarities, there are seven separate series identified for description due to variations in compilation techniques
for daily and monthly reports.
Series Description
REPORTS
DAILY JOURNAL January 28, 1872-April 30, 1905 Boxes 1-5 Arranged chronologically Series contains journals for daily weather observations. Weather observers recorded instrument readings at regular intervals
each day for such features as relative humidity, barometric pressure, temperature, wind direction and speed, degree of cloud
cover, precipitation, and other remarks. The recording format includes lengthy comments written as notebook entries. Each
entry through June 30, 1895 is handwritten in ink. Later journals appear in typescript.
RECORD OF TELEGRAPHIC REPORTS September 1, 1872-March 23, 1873 Box 1 Arranged chronologically Series contains a record of reports received at the Cleveland Weather Service office on a daily basis. The source of a cabled
report is listed along with the number of words in it. This series is appended into volumes 1 and 2 of the above series and
is not extensive.
REPORTS RECORD January 15, 1902-December 31, 1904 Box 5 Arranged chronologically This series contains one volume. Several report formats appear in this series. An hourly record of changes in wind direction,
barometric pressure, and other readings appears first. This is followed by listings of addresses to which forecasts were mailed,
reports of chalk plate maps issued, and equipment inventories.
DAILY RECORD OF OBSERVATIONS November 1, 1870-October 31, 1881 Box 6 and Loose volumes 25-29 Arranged chronologically This series contains volumes monitoring daily weather observations. Information is presented on printed forms with the data
handwritten onto the form for each entry.
MONTHLY METEOROLOGICAL REPORTS September 1881-December 1885 Loose volume 30 Arranged chronologically This series contains one volume recording meteorological data compiled on a form documenting monthly accumulations of daily
observations.
RECORD OF MONTHLY METEOROLOGICAL REPORTS 1886-1904 Box 7 Arranged chronologically This series contains bound forms with handwritten entries recording weather condition observations on a daily basis in order
to provide weather patterns for a monthly report. Separate sheets record data for wind, temperature, relative humidity, precipitation,
and miscellaneous phenomena.
DAILY FORMS 1001, 1002, 1014 1905-1948 Box 8-20 Arranged chronologically This series includes daily reporting forms for weather observations contained in bound volumes. In the years 1930-1933 two
volumes appear for each year. Form 1001 is a daily record of observations, 1002 is a form for summaries, form 1014 is a daily
log sheet.
