Introduction
The Vessel Logs for the tug EDNA G., stationed at Two Harbors, Minnesota, were transferred to the Center for Archival Collections,
Bowling Green State University in February 1983 for microfilming with the cooperation of A. C. Hanson and the Duluth, Missabe
and Iron Range Railway Company of Duluth, Minnesota. The EDNA G. collection (1917-1981), consists of seventeen volumes of
Vessel Logs and two additional volumes (1947-1956) of the Vessel Log and Ledger for tug charges. The log books for the period
1936-1940 are missing. The information found within these log books includes the names of boats assisted, the date and the
type of assistance provided by the EDNA G.
Vessel History
The EDNA G. was a tell tug built in Cleveland, Ohio by the Cleveland Shipbuilding Company in 1896. The tug, with Official
Number 136545 and Hull Number 25, was launched April 4, 1896. The owner was the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway Company
of Duluth, Minnesota. The tug was stationed as a harbor tug and fire boat at Two Harbors, Minnesota. Her last tow was taking
the CASON J. CALLAWAY from Lake to dock on December 30, 1980. The final lay up entry was on January 6, 1981.
The boat's dimensions were 92'5" x 23' x 7'5". The tonnage was 154 gross and 67 net. The engine was built in Cleveland, ohio
by the Cleveland Ship Building Company in 1896. It was a Fore and Aft Compound engine with cylinder and stroke of 18-40 x
30. The engine developed an indicated horsepower of 700. The single boiler was a water tube built in New York, New York by
the Babcock & Wilcox Company in 1896. Its size was 2160 square feet (Heat.-Surf.). The boat's second boiler was built in 1948,
also by the Babcock & Wilcox Company. This water tube boiler was 3460 square feet (Heat.-Surf.).
In February 1979, the EDNA G. lost a blade from her propeller in heavy ice at Two Harbors, Minnesota.
