Introduction/History

The Association of College Unions International joined the National Student Affairs Archives with the first transfer of documents in 1988. The collection has grown into seven cubic feet of conference proceedings, publications, membership and regional files, dating from 1915 to the present. No restrictions exist on the research use of this collection and duplication is permitted for scholarly purposes. The collection was arranged and finding aid completed by Ann Bowers, National Student Affairs Archivist, in January 2006.

The Association of College Unions International first organized in 1914 as the National Association of Student Unions. Early in its history it became international with the addition of McGill University and the University or Toronto in 1922. It now has member institutions in ten countries in addition to the United States. The Association has served as the main source for information on college union operations and proved especially helpful to its members after World War II when an unprecedented number of students enrolled in colleges and universities and a major college union building boom began. The Association now has a central office in Bloomington, Indiana, with a staff of twelve and a full-time executive director. A recent restructuring process resulted in the Association changing from a constituency-based to a knowledge-based organization. Four Education Councils were formed to address the Association's four competency areas: Administration, Finance and Management; Campus Life and Programming Management; Auxiliary Services; and Facilities and Operations. It also is divided into fifteen regions, each with its own regional director. This structure encourages the participation of students as well as union staff in the Association's programs, activities and leadership positions.
