Sue Hager Papers - MS 1174
Introduction | Biographical Sketch | Scope and Content | Series Description | Inventory
The Sue Hager Papers contain materials related to Hager’s tenure as the head coach of the BGSU Women’s Basketball program from 1971 – 1976. The collection was donated by Hager to the Center for Archival Collections in the Spring of 2011. The 1/2 cubic foot of material contains office files and artifacts. The office files range from practice and game plans to tournament details and programs, with various other materials included.
No restrictions exist on the use of this collection. Duplication may be permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The register was completed by undergraduate student archival assistant Rebecca Denes and Dana Nemeth, Library Associate II, in June 2012.
Sue Hager joined Bowling Green State University as an instructor in the department of Women’s Physical Education in 1968. She served as head coach of the women’s basketball team for five seasons. During later seasons, she was also the Director of Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics. In addition to these duties, Hager also served as an instructor and later reached the rank of tenured professor. She continued to be involved in Women’s Athletics and Physical Education once her tenure as coach was over in 1976. She retired from the university as an assistant professor in 1991, and was granted emeritus status.
Hager continues to be involved in the university community. She was a member of the University Centennial Committee and, along with Larry Weiss, co-wrote and co-produced a documentary about the women’s basketball program. The documentary, “BGSU Women’s Basketball: A Legacy of Excellence,” aired on WBGU-TV in 2010. The documentary files of both Hager and Weiss exist in an additional manuscript collection, MS – 1175.
The items in this collection were collected and filed by Hager from 1971 – 1976 during her tenure as head coach of the BGSU Women’s Basketball program. The office files include tryout agendas, practice notes, team rosters, season schedules, game plays, tournament information, press releases, and other information either related directly to coaching or related to the team’s season in general. The tryout agendas and many of the game plays are handwritten by Hager herself. She also included mimeographed instructional booklets and handouts, one of the booklets authored by her, in her team training repertoire. The presence of these materials in the collection creates the ability for researchers to examine practice and play techniques from the 1970s.
The era represented through the Sue Hager Papers is historically and culturally significant. Hager took over as coach just prior to the institution of Title IX, which was enacted during the summer of 1972. Printed materials, including press releases and tournament programs, provide insight into the differences in attitudes towards women’s athletics in the 1970s and women’s athletics today. The items in this collection represent a transitional time period in women’s athletics not just for the university, but for female college athletes throughout the country.
