 Introduction

The records of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport date from 1978 to 2011. These records were initially donated to the Center for Archival Collections on November 7, 1987 by Janet Hams, NASSS President, with additional files being donated from the organization since then throughout the years.

No restrictions exist on the use of this collection. Duplication may be permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The register was completed by undergraduate student assistant Emily Schoenlein in June 2012, with revisions by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts.

 Agency Sketch

The North American Society for the Sociology of Sport exists to promote, stimulate, and encourage the sociological study of play, games, sport and contemporary physical culture.

The North American Society for the Sociology of Sport was founded in 1978 by Andrew Yiannakis and Susan Greendorfer. After the 2nd Big Ten CIC Symposium on the Sociology of Sport in 1978, a group of about twenty interested members, led by Yiannakis, called for the formation of a steering committee to oversee the creation of a new society on the sociology of sport. This steering committee was given the task of starting a newsletter, collecting membership dues, and planning for an annual conference. The society’s first newsletter, The NASSS Newsletter, was published in December 1978 with Andrew Yiannakis as the first editor.

 Scope & Content

The records of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport cover the period from 1978 to 2011, with the bulk of the material dating from 1980 to 1989.

Board of Directors minutes (1989-2004) are primarily concerned with membership dues, conference planning, and student affairs. Business Meeting minutes (1983-2004) are primarily concerned with treasurer’s reports and issues dealing with the newsletter and journal. Executive Board minutes (1990-1992) and Steering Committee minutes (1982-1988) deal with various reports and proposals from within the organization. Election material (1987-2001), membership lists (1981-1990), and constitutions and bylaws (1984-2002) are arranged chronologically.

Conference correspondences (1983-1989) deal primarily with the planning of the annual NASSS conferences. Various correspondence files (1978-2007) contain correspondences from presidents, archivists, treasurers, editors, and boards of directors. Programs and files document the annual conferences (1980-2011) and also contain calls for papers, paper abstracts, information and reports from various NASSS conferences.

Office files contain information relating to the NASSS Archivist, Board of Directors, Executive Board, Nominating Committee, President, Regional Coordinator, Treasurer, and various other personnel. Office files also provide information regarding the Sociology of Sport Journal editors.

The finances of the organization are documented in treasurer’s reports (1988-1994), contracts, and financial statements. Photographs illustrate NASSS presidents and award winners.

Printed material includes issues of the NASSS newsletter (1978-2005), the Sociology of Sport Journal (1984-2008), and the Arena Newsletter/Review (1975-1990).
