Introduction | Agency History | Scope and Content | Series Description | Inventory

 Introduction

The records of the Ohio Music Education Association were donated to the Center for Archival Collections beginning in 1986 through the cooperation of various OMEA Officers and Historians through the years, with material continuing to be received.

Literary and property rights have been dedicated to the public and duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and scholarly research. The collection was processed and revised by Stephen M. Charter, Head, Center for Archival Collections, Puja Wells, a graduate intern, and Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts, who compiled the consolidated register in 2011.

 Agency History

As noted in the mission statement on the official OMEA website, "Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) is the principal organization in Ohio promoting music education in elementary and secondary schools as well as colleges and universities. One of the largest state music education associations in the United States, OMEA is a federated state affiliate of MENC, The National Association for Music Education."

The organization evolved from its beginnings on June 6, 1924 when 14 band directors met in Fostoria, Ohio to form the Ohio School Band Association. The focus of the group had expanded by 1929 to include orchestras and the name was changed to the Ohio School Band and Orchestra Association. Finally, as the organizational interests grew to include all school music activities in the State of Ohio, in the 1932-1933 school-year the last name change was adopted to become the Ohio Music Education Association. Encompassing at that time 81 active members, six district festival and state-wide competitions it has since grown to serve students in 612 public school districts and 51 colleges and universities in Ohio. Represented by an official publication, TRIAD, the association has continued to serve as an advocate for music education and music educators in the State of Ohio.

The Association has a website at www.omea-ohio2.org
