All issues of the BG News have been indexed using Library of Congress Subject Headings. These are the same terms used for "Subject Searching" in the BG Link online catalog. A copy of this book is available in the Reference Area, or you may wish to consult the Reference Archivist or Reference Librarian on duty.
General pointers:
- More than one term may be entered. "Hits" include articles which have all the terms entered. For "OR" searching, simply do a separate search on each term desired.
- Do not search on articles ("a, an, the"), most prepositions, or extremely common terms ("BGSU" or "Bowling Green State University," for example). Punctuation is ignored.
- Be sure to use Library of Congress Subject Headings. Thus, articles about fraternities and sororities are indexed as "Greek letter societies." Articles about graduation are indexed as "commencement." See the Pattern Headings--Individual Educational Institutions and Free-Floating Subdivisions--Classes of Persons for the most commonly used terms relating to BGSU and students.
- Letters and signed editorials are indexed by the name of the author as well as the topic and the term "letter" or "editorial." Reviews are indexed by the name of the item reviewed and the term "review." There is no index by article title.
- Items not indexed: Wire service articles (for example, Associated Press (AP) articles, syndicated columns, editorials reprinted from other newspapers, etc.), the Calendar of Events pages (bi-weekly supplement listing special events), most reports of games, most photographs, most by-lines (except editorials).
