Infantry Units: 144th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

Infantry units were recruited from all over the state. Those represented in detail here are the ones recruited primarily from northwest Ohio counties and those whose members wrote to local newspapers. More information will be added as it becomes available.

This Regiment was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, May 11, 1864, to serve 100 days. It was composed of the 64th Battalion, Ohio National Guard, from Wood County, and the 19th Battalion, Ohio National Guard from Wyandot County. The Regiment was ordered to report, without delay, to General Wallace at Baltimore. Upon its arrival in that city, Companies G and K were detached for duty in the fortifications, and the remainder of the regiment reported to General Morris, at Fort McHenry, and from there Company E was ordered to Wilmigton, Delaware; Company B to Camp Parole, near Annapolis; and Company I to Fort Dix, at the Relay House. On the 18th of May the Regiment was relieved from duty at Fort McHenry, and ordered to the Relay House. Companies B, G, and I, were in the engagement at Monocacy Junction, losing in killed, wounded and prisoners about fifty men. On the 13th day of July the Regiment was ordered to Washington and from there moved toward Winchester. It halted at Snicker's Gap, and was moved back toward Washington, but it was soon again faced toward the Shenandoah Valley, moving via Harper's Ferry. On the 13th of August a portion of the 144th, while guarding a train near Berryville, Virginia, was attacked by Moseby's command with two pieces of artillery. The detachment lost five killed, six wounded, and sixty captured. The Regiment was mustered out August 24 and 31, 1864 on expiration of term of service.
