Albert Langworthy enlisted as a 33 year old Captain, raising Company A, 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry from the Findlay Zouaves and mustering into service August 22, 1861. Later that summer, he was appointed Colonel of the 99th Ohio, mustering into service August 26, 1862. The regiment immediately departed for Cincinnati, and following a retreat from a position near Covington, Kentucky, Langworthy was summarily dismissed from the service (by order of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton) for cowardice. Based on the testimony of Langworthy and his supporters, it appears that his removal was prompted by considerations more political and social than military.
