Field and Staff

Major Lucien C. Buttles

Lucien C. Buttles enlisted as a 40 year old Major of the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel to date October 14, 1861, he resigned his commission November 28, 1861.

Surgeon George Rocap Weeks

Doctor George R. Weeks enlisted as a 35 year old assistant surgeon in the 25th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on July 2, 1861, mustering into service the same day. On July 23, 1861, he was discharged for a promotion to Surgeon of the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On February 19, 1863, he was commissioned Surgeon in the U.S. Volunteers Medical Staff, a position which he held until he was mustered out October 7, 1865. He was awarded a brevet promotion to Lieutenant Colonel to date October 6, 1865. He died January 1, 1903.

Enlisted 6/15/1862 as assistant surgeon, mustered out 6/26/1864.

Roster - Company A, 24th OVI

Second Lieutenant Edgar Romeyn Kellogg, Company A

Edgar Romeyn Kellogg enlisted as a 19 year old Sergeant in Company A, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 6, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was promoted to Sergeant Major on June 20, 1861, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in Company A to date July 6, 1861.
Deciding to enlist in the Regular Army, Lieutenant Kellogg resigned his commission on October 28, 1861 and enlisted as a Private in Company B, 1st Battalion, 16th U.S. Infantry on November 29, 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant Major around February 1, 1862 and was soon commissioned Second Lieutenant in Company B on April 1, 1862. He was again promoted to First Lieutenant to date May 3, 1862 and received two brevet promotions in his career, one to captain dating December 31, 1862 for actions at the Battle of Stones River and one to Major dating September 1, 1864 for actions during the Atlanta Campaign. He was promoted to Captain to date February 16, 1865 and served in the U.S. Army until his retirement on December 16, 1899.

1st Lieutenant David A. Merrill

Enlisted 6/6/1861 as a Sergeant, promoted to 1st Sergeant 8/6/1861, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 6/6/1862, promoted to 1st Lieutenant and transferred to Company F, 8/11/1862, promoted to Captain 1/1/1863, mustered out 6/17/1864.

Corporal Albert F. Lee

Albert F. Lee enlisted as a 19 year old Corporal in Company A, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 6, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Wounded in action February 24, 1864 at Dalton, Georgia, he died of his wounds March 8, 1864 at Chattanooga, Tennessee and is buried at Marietta National cemetery.

Hospital Steward Frank E. Pray

Frank E. Pray enlisted as a 22 year old Private in Company A, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 6, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was promoted to Hospital Steward August 2, 1861 and was discharged for disability April 25, 1862.
Pray reenlisted as the Captain of Company C, 88th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on May 26, 1862, mustering into service June 12, 1862. He was mustered out September 26, 1862 at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio. He served at the end of the war as Captain of Company A, 192nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, mustering into service March 1, 1865. He was mustered out September 1, 1865 at Winchester, Virginia.

Second Sergeant David N. Bodfish, Company A

David N. Bodfish enlisted as a 28 year old Sergeant in Company A, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 6, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He died of disease August 4, 1861 at Clarksburg, Virginia. The following letter from Musician Osmer B. Hall of his company gives the circumstances of his demise.

Corporal Charles B. Davis, Company A

Charles B. Davis enlisted as an 18 year old Corporal in Company A, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 6, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was discharged for disability August 7, 1862 at Columbus, Ohio.

Musician Osmer B. Hall, Company A

Osmer B. Hall enlisted as a 20 year old Musician in Company A, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 6, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was discharged for disability July 20, 1862 at Nashville, Tennessee.

Private Joseph M. Millis, Company A

Joseph M. Millis enlisted as a 42 year old Private in Company A, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 6, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Reenlisting as a veteran in 1864, he transferred into the Veterans Reserve Corps on July 27, 1865.

Peter Bittman enlisted as a 23 year old Private in Company G, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 24, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was mustered out June 19, 1864.

Commissary Sergeant John Cox

John Cox enlisted as a 30 year old Private in Company K, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 13, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was promoted successively to Corporal November 18, 1861, to Sergeant November 1, 1862, and to Commissary Sergeant July 14, 1863. His method of discharge is unknown.
