Lieutenant Colonel Charles A. Park
Charles A. Park enlisted as a 28 year old First Lieutenant in Company H, 8th
Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 20, 1861, mustering into service April 30, 1861.
He was promoted to regimental Adjutant to date May 5, 1861, and reenlisted for
three years' service on June 10, 1861. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel to date
July 8, 1861, he resigned his commission November 4, 1862.

Lieutenant Colonel Franklin Sawyer
Franklin Sawyer was born July 13, 1825 in Auburn, Crawford Co., Ohio and enlisted
as a 35 year old Captain in Company D, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 20,
1861, mustering into service the same day. He reenlisted for three years' service
on June 18, 1861, and was promoted to Major July 8, 1861. He was promoted to
Lieutenant Colonel to date November 25, 1861 and mustered out at that rank July
13, 1864. Sawyer was wounded July 1, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg and was
awarded a brevet promotion to Brigadier General to date March 13, 1865. He died
August 22, 1892 in Norwalk, Ohio.

Freeman E. Franklin enlisted as a 37 year old captain of Company A, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service April 27, 1861. He
was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on May 4, 1861, and mustered out August 24,
1861. Commissioned Major in the 34th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 2, 1861,
he was mustered into service September 2, 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant
Colonel to date May 14, 1862 and to Colonel to date July 18, 1863. He was mustered
out September 17, 1864.

Adjutant Joseph R. Swigert
Joseph R. Swigert enlisted as a 22 year old Corporal in Company C, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on June 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was
commissioned First Lieutenant and designated regimental Adjutant to date July 6,
1861 and served in that role until November 1, 1862. He was then transferred to
Company G but was on detached service on General Nathan Kimball's staff. He was
awarded a brevet promotion to Major to date November 13, 1863 and was mustered
out July 13, 1864.

Albert H. Winslow enlisted as a 33 year old Captain of Company A, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on June 4, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Promoted

Wilson S. Parker enlisted as a 19 year old Private in Company D, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on June 29, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was
promoted to Sergeant at an unknown date and to Sergeant Major to date December 20,
1862. He was mustered out July 13, 1864.

?Thomas McEbright? Enlisted on November 27, 1861, age unknown, as a surgeon,
to serve for three years. He resigned January 6, 1863.

Captain Ezra Westcote Clark

Ezra Westcote Clark enlisted as a 22 year First Sergeant of Company A, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service April 26, 1861.
Promoted to the rank of Captain to date May 6, 1861, he was mustered out August
18, 1861 at Columbus, Ohio.
He was appointed Adjutant of the newly formed 34th Ohio Volunteer Infantry,
"Piatt's Zouaves," on August 17, 1861, serving in that capacity for several years.
He was promoted to the rank of Captain to date February 29, 1864 and commissioned
into the U.S. Adjutant General Dept. He served in this capacity for the remainder
of his service, obtaining a brevet promotion to the rank of Major to date May 11,
1865, before mustering out October 30, 1865.

Benjamin F. Ogle was commissioned a 32 year old First Lieutenant of Company A,
8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same
day. He mustered out of the three months' service and reenlisted for three years
on June 4, 1861. Promoted to Captain to date November 25, 1861, he resigned his
commission November 27, 1862.

First Lieutenant Charles W. Barnes
Charles W. Barnes enlisted as a 20 year old Second Lieutenant in Company A,

Reenlisting for three years' service on June 4, 1861, he was promoted to First
Lieutenant to date February 6, 1862 and transferred to Company D. He was killed
in action September 17, 1862 at the Battle of Antietam.

First Lieutenant William D. Wetherell
William D. Wetherell enlisted as a 21 year old Sergeant in Company E, 8th
Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 24, 1861, mustering into service the same day.
He reenlisted for three years' service on June 25, 1861, and was promoted to
First Sergeant August 28, 1861. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant to date
March 11, 1862, and to First Lieutenant to date October 17, 1862. He was transferred
to Company A on February 23, 1863 and was mustered out July 13, 1864.

Second Lieutenant John N. Travis
John N. Travis enlisted as a 22 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He reenlisted for three years' service on May 28, 1861 and was promoted to Corporal. Commissioned Second Lieutenant to date November 7, 1862, he was mustered out July 13, 1864. He later was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 2nd veteran Volunteers Infantry on February 20, 1865, being promoted to First Lieutenant to date September 26, 1865. He served with this regiment until mustered out March 16, 1866. He served in the Army again from January 22, 1867 to August 11, 1868. Sergeant Peter J. Hosler
Peter J. Hosler enlisted as a 28 year old Corporal in Company A, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on June 2, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Promoted
to Sergeant January 17, 1863, he was mustered out July 13, 1864.

Sergeant Edward Jones
Edward Jones enlisted as a 21 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer
Infantry on May 28, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Wounded in the head
July 3, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg, he died of his wounds February 28, 1864
at Camp Dennison, Ohio. The following letter from an unknown comrade pays tribute
to Jones.

Sergeant Samuel S. Kissinger
(also 65th New York Volunteer Infantry)
Samuel S. Kissinger enlisted as a 24 year old Sergeant in Company A, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He
was discharged to join Co. K, 65th New York Volunteer Infantry to date May 20,
1861. He enlisted as a Sergeant in Company K, 65th New York on August 3, 1861,
mustering into service the same day.
Kissinger served with the regiment through the entire war, rising successively
in rank to First Sergeant (September 1, 1864), Second Lieutenant (September 1, 1864),
First Lieutenant of Company E (September 10, 1864), and finally to the rank of
Captain of Company K (May 11, 1865). Having reenlisted as a veteran on January
5, 1864, he was mustered out July 17, 1865 at Hall's Hill, Virginia.

Corporal Samuel F. Poorman
Samuel F. Poorman enlisted as a 21 year old Corporal in Company A, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Many
members of the 8th Ohio desiring to enlist as a three years' regiment, Poorman
was mustered out May 28, 1861 to enlist in the three years' regiment. On June 1,
1862, he was appointed hospital steward and transferred to the U.S. Regular Army.

Private Andrew H. Byers
Andrew H. Byers enlisted as a 30 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on May 28, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was
discharged for disability January 17, 1862. He later served as Captain of Company
D, 86th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, being commissioned May 26, 1862 and mustered out
September 25, 1862 at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio.

John W. Canary enlisted as a 19 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer
Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was mustered out

July 13, 1864.

Fernando N. Colwell enlisted as a 21 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Reenlisting
of three years' service on May 28, 1861, he was mustered out July 13, 1864.

Rufus M. Norton enlisted as a 21 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio

serving until he was mustered out July 13, 1864.

Francis W. Butterfield enlisted as a 30 year old Captain in Company C, 8th
Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 20, 1861, mustering into service the same day.
He reenlisted for three years' service on June 5, 1861, and mustered out with
the regiment July 13, 1864. On March 10, 1865, he was commissioned Colonel of
the 192nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was mustered out of service September 1,
1865 at Winchester, Virginia.

Promoted to regimental Adjutant to date November 1, 1862, he served in that
capacity only briefly before being promoted to the rank of Captain to date
January 15, 1863, and transferring to the command of Company G. He was wounded
in action May 6, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness, and mustered out July 13, 1864.

action December 13, 1862 at the Battle of Fredericksburg.

Matthew R. DuBois enlisted as a 25 year old Private in Company C, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on June 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He
died December 24, 1862 at Falmouth, Virginia. The following letter, from his
company commander Captain Francis W. Butterfield, gives the circumstances of his demise.

the Veterans Reserve Corps on November 19, 1863.

promoted to Captain to date July 9, 1861. He resigned his commission June 27, 1862.

Infantry on April 29, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was mustered
out August 18, 1861 at Columbus, Ohio.
Later in the war, he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company B, 123rd Ohio Volunteer
Infantry on August 21, 1862, mustering into service September 24, 1862. Captured
June 15, 1863 at the Second Battle of Winchester, he was discharged for promotion
to Second Lieutenant in the 37th U.S. Colored Troops on January 15, 1865. Promoted
to First Lieutenant to date January 12, 1866, he was mustered out February 11,
1867.

Charles enlisted April 24, 1861 in Fremont, Ohio as a First Lieutenant in Co.
F, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was mustered out of the 3 months organization
on June 5, 1861, reenlisting immediately as a 3 years volunteer. He served with
the regiment through the Peninsula, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg,
and Chancellorsville campaigns before his discharge, which occurred June 7, 1863
in Washington, D.C. He married Amelia Vandercook February 1, 1858 in Fremont,
Ohio.

First Lieutenant Henry A. Farmer
Henry A. Farmer enlisted as a 23 year old First Sergeant in Company F, 8th
Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 5, 1861. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant
of Company A on February 6, 1862, serving in that capacity through the Peninsula,
Antietam, and campaigns before transferring back to Company F November 29, 1862.
He was promoted to First Lieutenant to date January 7, 1863, and served with the
regiment through the hard fought campaigns of 1863 and 1864 before mustered out
July 13, 1864.

Sergeant Michael F. Halderman
Michael Halderman enlisted as a 21 year old Private in Co. F, 8th Ohio Volunteer
Infantry on April 24, 1861 and was mustered out into the three years' service on
June 5, 1861. He served with the 8th Ohio throughout the war, being promoted to
Corporal and then Sergeant before mustering out July 13, 1864. He later served
in Co. K, 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, being drafted October 14, 1864. He was
promoted to Corporal January 1, 1865, and to Sergeant June 7, 1865 before
mustered out of service July 13, 1865.

Private Jacob A. Lemmon
Jacob Lemon enlisted as a 44 year old Private in Co. F, 8th Ohio Volunteer
Infantry at Washington, Ohio on October 5, 1862. He took part in the Chancellorsville
and Gettysburg campaigns before he was killed in action November 27, 1863 at
Mine Run, Virginia. He is buried at Fredericksburg National Cemetery.

DeWitt C. Lloyd enlisted as a 21 year old Private in Company F, 8th Ohio Volunteer
Infantry on June 5, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was promoted
to Corporal during his service and was discharged December 29, 1862.

Volunteer Infantry on April 20, 1861, mustering into service April 30, 1861. He
reenlisted for three years' service on June 24, 1861 and was promoted to Sergeant
the same day. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant March 11, 1862 and to First
Lieutenant to date April 26, 1862. He was killed in action July 3, 1863 at the
Battle of Gettysburg.

Stephen Strange enlisted as a 29 year old Private in Company H, 8th Ohio Volunteer
Infantry on April 20, 1861, mustering into service April 30, 1861. He reenlisted

He was wounded in action July 2, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg, and again
May 6, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness. Promoted to First Lieutenant to
date March 3, 1864, he was mustered out July 13, 1864.

Albert D. West enlisted as a 19 year old Private in Company H, 8th Ohio Volunteer
Infantry on April 20, 1861, mustering into service April 30, 1861. He reenlisted

day. He was promoted to First Sergeant in early 1862 and was killed in action

Alonzo O. Packerd enlisted as a 25 year old Sergeant in Company H, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on April 20, 1861, mustering into service April 30, 1861. He
was mustered out August 22, 1861.

Sergeant Thaddeus S. Potter
Thaddeus S. Potter enlisted as a 23 year old Corporal in Company H, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on June 24, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Promoted
to the rank of Sergeant during his service, he mustered out with the regiment
July 13, 1864.

Private William H. Clough
William H. Clough enlisted as a 30 year old Private in Company H, 8th Ohio
Volunteer Infantry on April 20, 1861, mustering into service April 30, 1861. He
reenlisted for three years' service on June 24, 1861. Clough was mustered out
July 13, 1864.

Major Azor Howitt Nickerson
Azor Howitt Nickerson was born in Ohio and enlisted as a 23 year old Second
Lieutenant of Company I, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 30, 1861, mustering
into service the same day. Promoted to First Lieutenant to date April 29, 1862
and to Captain January 20, 1863, Nickerson was dangerously wounded July 3, 1863
at the Battle of Gettysburg. He recovered and transferred to the Veterans'
Reserve Corps on November 12, 1863. Awarded a brevet promotion to Major to date
March 13, 1865, he was mustered out of volunteer service April 19, 1866 but served
in the regular Army until November 15, 1883.

Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 10, 1861, mustering into service the same day.

to date January 20, 1863. He was dismissed.

transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps January 12, 1864.
