Almanacs
A book of facts or statistics which could be current or retrospective. Examples of almanacs are: The Information Please Almanac, The World Almanac, or The Almanac of Famous People. Almanacs can be found in the Main Circulating stacks, in Jerome Library's Reference Collection, the Browne Popular Culture Library, and in many other collections.
Articles
Works of prose, having their own title and author, within larger works, such as periodicals or encyclopedias. BGSU Libraries has many such articles. If you have questions on finding articles, please ask at a Reference Desk nearest you.
Assessment Instruments
The Main Reference Collection has tools to help you locate assessment instruments (educational and psychological measurement tests), such as Tests in Print, Mental Measurements Yearbook, etc.). Stop by the Main Reference Desk or the reference desk in the Curriculum Resource Center for assistance in finding tests and measurement instruments.
Atlases
Atlases can primarily be found in the Jerome and Science Library Reference Collections. To find them in the BGSU Library Catalog, try a word search for atlases or ask for assistance at the Main Reference Desk.
CD-ROMs
These can be found in almost any collection within University Libraries. For assistance in finding these, please ask at the Main Reference Desk.
Computer Software
The Curriculum Resource Center has a growing collection of PS-grade 12 educational software available for check out at the CRC circulation desk. Some older software is shelved in the main stacks of Jerome; use the BGSU Libraries catalog to do a title, subject or keyword search.
Microsoft software is no longer available at the Jerome, Science Library, or Firelands circulation desks. Please see the Microsoft Agreement page for information on obtaining this software.
Curriculum Guides/Courses of Study
These guides are developed for all K-12 subject areas and identify what should be taught in classrooms based on state curriculum standards. They are prepared by various elementary and secondary school systems or state departments of education for teachers in their respective areas. Curriculum guides in book format are available principally from Northwest Ohio and are housed in the Curriculum Resource Center (CRC) in a special area for curriculum guides. The easiest way to search for them in the BGSU Libraries Catalog is by conducting an author search using the name of the school system (i.e. Bowling Green City School District).
The Kraus Curriculum Development Library (KCDL), an extensive collection of curriculum guides from all over North America, is available on microfiche and located in the CRC. See the ERIC microfiche collection (located in the Microforms area on the first floor) for another important source of curriculum guides.
Dictionaries
All of the Libraries and Special Collections have dictionaries. To locate a dictionary in any of the collections, perform a title or word search in the BGSU Libraries Catalog. The Library also subscribes to electronic dictionaries. These are available directly using the research databases. For assistance, ask a librarian.
Electronic Journals
A very large number of electronic journals (or ejournals) are available at the BGSU Libraries. The Libraries maintain a list of electronic journals which includes electronic versions of print journals held in the BGSU Libraries, the holdings of the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center, full text journals from many of our Research Databases, as well as a few freely available electronic journals. If you have any questions on the use of these journals or how to find articles in them, please ask at the Reference Desks of Jerome Library or Ogg Science Library.
Encyclopedias
General and topical encyclopedias can be found in all of the libraries and collections. To locate an encyclopedia, perform a title or word search in the BGSU Libraries Catalog. The Library also subscribes to electronic encyclopedias. These are available directly using the BGSU Libraries Catalog or the research databases. For assistance, ask a librarian.
Films
A few hundred films primarily from the ship building industry reside in the Historical Collection of the Great Lakes.
There are other films available in the BGSU Libraries. Simply perform a keyword search in the BGSU Libraries Catalog on your topic and limit to MATERIAL TYPE > AUDIOVISUAL or VIDEO RECORDING. They can be found with a title search as well.
Gazeteers
Gazeteers are a kind of dictionary for place names. Several kinds of gazeteers are located in the University Libraries. To find them, try a word search in the BGSU Libraries Catalog on "gazeteer".
Globes
The Curriculum Resource Center has three globes available to be checked out for one week.
Indexes
Indexes are used to locate periodical articles, as well as book reviews, statistical information, government documents, and many other types and formats of materials. All of the libraries and collections have indexes. To locate an index, perform a title or word search in the BGSU Libraries Catalog. The Library also subscribes to a wide variety of electronic indexes. Many of these have links to full text materials. Access these directly using the research databases. Journals, Magazines, Periodicals, Serials
All of the libraries and collections subscribe to serial publications such as magazines and journals. To find out if we subscribe to a certain title and where it is located, perform a title search in the BGSU Libraries Catalog. To locate articles on a specific topic, use an index or a research database. Many of the research database contain links to allow you to check the availability of the periodical title in the libraries' collections. These links will show you what dates we have and where the periodical is located.
Maps
Maps of all kinds can be found in the BGSU Libraries. Maps are available in the Main Reference Collection, the Center for Archival Collections, the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes, the Curriculum Resource Center, and Main Government Documents.
To find the map you need, try a Word search in the BGSU Libraries Catalog or ask for assistance at the Main Reference Desk.
Music Theses
The Music Library and Sound Recordings Archives contains over 700 masters' theses and documents written by graduate students in the College of Musical Arts. Theses are identified by call numbers beginning with MZ.

Newspapers
The BGSU Libraries has a number of newspaper subscriptions, national and international. Many of these newspapers are kept in the Periodicals Area (on the 1st floor of Jerome Library) behind the Periodicals Desk. We have Research Databases available for finding newspaper articles: Newspaper Source, LexisNexis Academic (full-text newspapers) and the BG News Index. For assistance, please ask at the Main Reference Desk or the Main Periodicals Desk.
The Center for Archival Collections maintains a collection of local area newspapers concentrating on the 19 counties in Northwest Ohio from the earliest times to the present. For a complete list of holdings, see Using the Guide to Newspapers at the CAC.
The Historical Collections of the Great Lakes has a chronological collection of marine news from major Great Lakes ports such as Cleveland, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, etc.; approx. 550 volumes.
Pamphlets
The pamphlet collection of the Center for Archival Collections includes publications by Bowling Green State University, as well as publications relating to Northwest Ohio from the 19th century onward.
Photographs
The photograph collection of the Center for Archival Collections concentrates on materials from Northwest Ohio, from the 19th century to the present. Manuscript collections with large photograph collections are available on the Center for Archival Collections Bibliography: Photographic Collections Web page. Individual items are accessible at the CAC.
Approximately 130,000 images of Great Lakes vessels, ports, and people, from the late 19th century to the present, are available in the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes. The is the largest collection (est. 200,000 drawings) of its kind in the region.
Pictures (Picture files)
The Curriculum Resource Center has a large number of picture files available for check out to BGSU students, staff and faculty. These are pictures, illustrations and photographs on educational themes, filed by subject. They can be checked out from the CRC service desk.
Puppets
The Curriculum Resource Center has a variety of puppets available for check out, including zoo animals, mythical creatures and other characters. These can be checked out at the CRC service desk and available to BGSU students, staff and faculty.
Recital Tapes
Recital tapes from the College of Musical Arts are housed in the Music Library and Sound Recordings Archives from 1966 to the present. Consult About the Collection for more information.
Reference Books & Materials
All of the libraries and collections contain reference materials such as indexes, databases, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. To locate reference materials search by title or word in the BGSU Libraries Catalog to find selected reference books, research databases, and web sites on various topics. Locations for reference materials will usually include the abbreviation "REF," such as "MAIN REF" or "POP CULT REF." Many reference materials are available electronically using the BGSU Libraries Catalog or the research databases. For further assisstance, Ask a Librarian.
Sheet Music
BGSU's sheet music collection is maintained as part of the Sound Recordings Archives. The primary collecting focus is popular music, although a variety of genres are represented in the collection. Sheet music does not circulate outside the library, but may be used in the Music Library and Sound Recordings Archives. For assistance in accessing this collection, please check with a ML/SRA staff member.
Teaching Aids
Teaching Aids are primarily located in the Curriculum Resource Center on the 2nd floor of Jerome Library. Teaching aids include games, puppets, puzzles, flash cards, etc. If you have question about teaching aids, please stop by the Curriculum Resource Center's reference desk, call 372-2956, or consult the Curriculum Resource Center's web site.
Videos: Streaming Digital Video
OhioLINK Digital Video Collection
The OhioLINK Digital Video Collection has hundreds of streaming digital videos which can be accessed via the Internet. If you are off campus, you will be asked to give your name and "P" number. These videos will eventually be available through the BGSU Libraries Catalog as well.

- Foreign Language Database
The ViewPoints Project is a growing collection of foreign language video clips in which native speakers elaborate on a wide variety of topics about their culture, family, daily life, and more. Each video is accompanied by a description of its contents, the country of the speaker, and additional grammar and vocabulary notes. Videos are available in QuickTime format. - Encyclopedia of Physics Demonstrations
Each of the 600 demonstrations is concisely produced and narrated, each stands alone and illustrates a particular principle of physics. Videos are accompanied by a printer-friendly PDF page which make contain graphics, tables or figures not easily rendered on the web. Videos are available in RealVideo format and may be streamed or dowloaded.
Television Learning Services (TLS)
Television Learning Services at WBGU has many videos available through their new Digital Video Streaming Service (DVSS). If you have questions about the service, please consult the DVSS Help screens.
- To find out what videos are available through TLS, go to the TLS Video Search page (you will be asked for your P number, and BGNet username and password). Follow the directions to reserve a video.
- OR -- go to your My BGSU account, and choose "My Video Search" from the Quick Links section -- you may need to scroll down to find the Quick Links. Follow the directions to reserve a video.
Videos: VHS and DVD
BGSU Libraries
BGSU Libraries do not have a large number of videos in our collections. However, to find what we do have, try these steps:
- To look for a particular video, do a title search in the BGSU Libraries Catalog, just as you would for a book.
- To look for a video on a particular topic, try a word search in the BGSU Libraries Catalog. Type your keyword in the Words box at the top of the screen. Below that, there is an option to limit by "Video Recording". Choose via the drop-down box to limit to All video recordings, Videocassette/VHS, or Videodisc/DVD.
NOTE: Instructors and professors sometimes put videos on Reserve for their classes.
OhioLINK
If the video you want is not in our library, you may be able to get it from another library in Ohio through OhioLINK. OhioLINK items usually take 2 to 5 school days to arrive at our library, where they will be held at the circulation desk for you. Searching the OhioLINK catalog is similar to searching the BGSU Libraries catalog:
- To look for a particular video, do a title search in the OhioLINK Catalog, just as you would for a book. To request the video, click on "Request This Item," and follow the instructions.
- To look for a video on a particular topic, click the link that says Advanced Keyword Search. Type your keyword in the box(es) at the top of the screen. Below that, where it says Limit Your Search, look at the options for Projected Medium. Then choose All, Videocassette, or Videodisc to limit to video recordings. Request the video by clicking on "Request This Item," and following the instructions.

The CRC has educational videos available for checkout by BGSU students and faculty and are primarily useful for classrooms of grades K-12 students. University professors may also find many of the upper grade videos suitable for the college classroom. The HCGL has a small collection of television specials on maritime topics including commercially produced videos on various Great Lakes topics, in particular, shipwrecks such as the Edumund Fitzgerald. - Classroom Technology Services (CTS)
CTS has a collection of videos for rental. Consult the Film and Video Rental page at CTS or call 419-372-7419 (122 Olscamp) for more information. - Northwest Ohio Education Technology Foundation

Toledo Lucas County and Wood County Public Libraries
The Toledo-Lucas County and Wood County Public Libraries may also be a source for videos. Consult the catalogs on their web sites to see if they may be of some assistance.
Videodiscs (Laser discs)
The Curriculum Resource Center has a number of videodiscs on educational subjects available for check out to BGSU students, staff and faculty. They can be previewed on the videodisc player at the CRC; Classroom Technology Services has videodisc players available for rental.
