Four faculty members have joined the College this fall. They are James W. Bachman, J.D., assistant professor of criminal justice; Dr. Christine M. Englebrecht, instructor of criminal justice; Dr. Derek T. Mason, associate professor and director of social work, and Dr. Kimberly S. Traver, instructor of communication disorders.
Bachman has been in the criminal justice system since 1963, serving six years as a prosecutor, eight years as a defense attorney
and 18 years as a judge of the Bowling Green (Ohio) Municipal Court. His search warrant booklet “You Are Commanded To Search,
is used extensively by Ohio judges, attorneys, and law enforcement officers. He is presently a retired judge. He has taught
at Bowling Green since 1992, where he teaches Introduction to Criminal Justice, Serial Homicide and Organized Crime.

Engelbrecht joins BGSU after receiving her Ph.D. in criminal justice from the University of Albany earlier this year. Her primary research
interests focus on the social construction of the victim; consequences (intended and unintended) of criminal justice policies
aimed at addressing violence; and the interaction of offenders, victims, and practitioners in the criminal justice system.
Recent research projects include an examination of victim participation in the criminal justice system and an evaluation of
two juvenile residential facilities in New York State. Other research interests include qualitative research methods, restorative
justice, and capital punishment. Englebrecht has previously taught courses in juvenile delinquency, punishment and corrections,
and criminology.

Mason has been a mental health clinician and administrator in both inpatient and outpatient settings for more than 20 years. His
practice specialties include gerontology, services for children, adolescents and families, and adolescent substance abuse.
He received an master’s of social work and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Iowa. Previously, he worked at Utah
State University and University of Calgary.
Traver joins the University from working in Findlay, Ohio, at the Findlay Ear, Nose & Throat Associates Inc., where she had provided
a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitative services since 1997. She is a 1993 BGSU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in
communications disorders. She earned a master’s degree in audiology from Wayne State University in 1995 and a doctorate of
audiology from the University of Florida in 2002. She is state licensed and American Speech and Hearing Association certified.
