How many times have you heard providers peers say “I don’t like working with women, they have so many problems”. This training will assist chemical dependency counselors and social workers to develop an understanding of the developmental model as it relates to the socio-cultural impact of women with co-occurring disorders in relation to their addiction and recovery. Participants will gain an understanding of women’s risk factors for co-occurring disorders and the barriers that women face in accessing treatment and engaging in the process of recovery. The importance of addressing sexuality, identity and psychosexual boundaries in the therapeutic process will be presented with discussion for practical application and implementation. Evidenced based best practices will be introduced and helpful hints on implementation in practice will be discussed.
This will be provided in a classroom setting using lecture, case studies and group discussion. Resource materials used; case vignettes, web sites; SAMHSA, NASW, NICD and NAMI.
