Degree track for the registered nurse. The College of Nursing offers an opportunity for graduates of associate degree and diploma nursing programs to earn a baccalaureate
degree in nursing. The RN student achieves the same terminal objectives as the basic student. However, this alternate track
for the RN provides for flexibility and an individualized curriculum approach for the nurse in practice. This program is offered online.
Admission requirements Criteria for admission to the program include:
Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall including all transfer work. Graduation from an accredited associate degree or diploma nursing program; diploma candidates must submit a portfolio; Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Ohio; Completion of the following prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of "C": a. BIOL 205, 314+315, 331, 332 (General Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology I and II) b. CHEM 109+110 or 125 (Elementary Chemistry w/lab) c. ENG 112 (Composition II) d. MATH (competency above 095/basic algebra level) e. MATH 115 (Statistics) f. PSYC 101 (General Psychology) g. PSYC 310 (Lifespan Development) h. F&N 207 (Nutrition) i. CS 100 (Computer Basics) j. PHIL 102 or 242 (Ethics)
Applications to the nursing program are available in the nursing offices on the main and Firelands campuses, in the Lima and
the Archbold offices. A lab fee is assessed for all clinical courses. To be eligible for enrollment via the Firelands campus,
students must reside in Erie, Huron, Lorain, Ottawa, Sandusky, or Seneca County or a county east of Lorain County.
Graduation requirements A minimum of 123 hours is required for graduation, of which 40 hours must be in upper-division coursework. In addition the
30 hours earned immediately before graduation must be completed through Bowling Green State University uninterrupted by coursework
at another university or college.
University requirements Each student is required to complete ENG 112 or demonstrate a proficiency in written expression equivalent to that attained
by students who have completed the course. A penalty is imposed if ENG 112 is not completed within the first 60 hours. (See
Academic Policies.) RN students must take or transfer in equivalent to math as demonstrated by a competency examination score
above 095 level. Students must also meet all BG Perspective requirements, including a Cultural Diversity in the U.S. course and an International Perspective course.
The curriculum for nursing students is based on Orem's self-care deficit theory in nursing. Person-centered approaches to
nursing care focus on helping people to increase their abilities to promote, maintain or restore their own health while also
involving the family and community. Critical thinking and decision-making are integral components of the curriculum.
The nursing program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and has full approval of the
Ohio Board of Nursing. The nursing courses and clinical experiences are provided by the College of Nursing at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus located in Toledo.
Special Considerations
Fees for the nursing program are the same as for all other degree programs at BGSU. However, there are additional charges
for required professional liability insurance, physical examinations, specific health tests, laboratory fees and workbooks.
Students are expected to arrange for their own transportation to and from the clinical agencies.
