Consortial Program with University of Toledo Health Science Campus
The BGSU nursing program is a partnership between BGSU and the College of Nursing at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus (UTHSC). During the first two years of study, students complete required
pre-requisite courses on the BGSU campus. Those students who are offered admission to the nursing program will complete required
nursing classes and clinical training on the UTHSC campus and at hospitals and health agencies throughout the greater Toledo
area. Even though students are taking classes in Toledo during their junior and senior years, they remain official BGSU students
- the degree is awarded by BGSU. This partnership has existed for over 30 years and the program is highly regarded throughout
the state and region.
The curriculum for nursing students is based on Orem's self-care deficit theory in nursing. Person-centered approaches to
nursing care focus on helping people to increase their abilities to promote, maintain or restore their own health while also
involving the family and community. Critical thinking and decision-making are integral components of the curriculum.
Career Opportunities
The program prepares nurses to care for all age groups in many different settings. A liberal arts background provides the
basis for critical thinking and informed decision-making. Students learn to function independently in community settings and
in managing nursing care for groups of hospitalized patients.
Opportunities exist in all health care settings including hospitals, community health agencies, schools and nursing homes.
In addition, the baccalaureate degree provides the basis for graduate preparation in professional nursing.
Health care recruiters from throughout Ohio actively recruit graduates, as well as currently enrolled students, as interns.
Curriculum
Consideration for admission into BGSU's Basic nursing program is dependent upon completion of prerequisite courses with a
minimum grade of a C or better in all BG Perspective courses, nursing pre-requisites, and supportive requirement courses and
a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 in all coursework, including transfer courses. Admission is competitive and usually requires a GPA higher than 2.5. The minimum GPA for admission in 2007 was approximately
3.27. Applications for a junior seat must be submitted by December 1 of the sophomore year. Prerequisite courses not completed
by the application deadline must be completed prior to the first class taken in the major. In addition, a math skills examination
conducted by the School of Nursing must be successfully completed before matriculating.
The courses taken during the freshman and sophomore years prepare students for admission into the nursing major. Students
take courses in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities while also selecting courses of special interest. The
nursing major is concentrated at the upper division. Students learn in state-of-the-art learning and computer laboratories.
Nursing classrooms at UTHSC are equipped with cutting-edge teaching technology.
Students admitted to the major are required to attend a summer term designed to develop basic skills in nursing. During the
junior year, students pursue skills in interpersonal communication, physical assessment and use of the nursing process. They
are introduced to research and the need for lifelong learning. The development of management and leadership potential is facilitated.
The School of Nursing has collaborative relationships in nursing education, consultation and practice with numerous hospitals
and community health agencies in northwest Ohio. By combining classroom theory with actual clinical experience, nursing students
attain the knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level professional practice.
Graduates of BGSU's nursing program are eligible to take the licensing examination (NCLEX-RN) to become a registered nurse
and to pursue graduate studies in nursing.
Special Considerations
Fees for the nursing program are the same as for all other degree programs at BGSU. However, there are additional charges
for uniforms, required professional liability insurance, physical examinations, specific health tests, laboratory fees and
workbooks.
Students are expected to arrange for their own transportation to and from the nursing classes and clinical laboratories in
Toledo and/or adjacent communities during their junior and senior years and in particular for the term in which they are enrolled
in the course in Community Health Nursing.
High School Preparation
Nursing knowledge is based on chemistry, mathematics, biology and social sciences. Most courses that nursing students take
are structured on the assumption that students have a basic knowledge of these subject areas. A weak high school preparation
may reduce a student's chance of being admitted to the professional nursing program since admission to BGSU in no way guarantees
admission to the program.
Students should follow a college preparatory curriculum that includes four units (credits) of English, three units of college
preparatory mathematics, three units of science, three units of social studies, two units of the same foreign language and
one unit of the visual or performing arts. Students who have not taken all these recommended courses may be required to take
University courses to make up any deficiencies.
Requirements for Transfer Students
All students requesting transfer into the upper-division nursing major will be considered on an individual basis. Admission
to BGSU must be completed before seeking admission to the nursing major to determine equivalency of previous coursework.
Consideration for transfer into the nursing major is based upon:
- Completion of prerequisite courses.
- Being in good academic standing.
- Available space in the program.
Transfer requests will be evaluated in terms of completed nursing courses to determine fit into the curriculum.
