What is Project Search?

Project Search is a Graduate College program that celebrates diversity, promotes civility, encourages inclusion, embraces healthy interdependence, and positively influences the BGSU learning community to discourage discrimination and harassment.

Project Search recruits students for University graduate programs and then coordinates an array of services designed to see these students through enrollment and graduation. The director of Project Search, along with Career Services graduate coordinators, also assists students with career placement. This close relationship continues into graduates' professional careers. Project search alumni are continually networking. They have ongoing opportunities to assist in recruiting new students for the program and often return to campus as guest speakers or attend special events.

Project Search is a model of BGSU's commitment to diversity. The program assists students in the achievement of academic and professional goals. Current graduate students often comment that the personal attention, prompt follow-up, financial aid information and other assistance they received are among the factors that influenced their decision to choose BGSU. The ongoing services and activities of Project Search also help students settle more comfortably into university life

More than 25 multiethnic organizations provide Bowling Green students a sense of community. Collectively they offer personal and social support in addition to helping students develop leadership skills for success in the world of work. Several organizations offer students the opportunity to gather in religious fellowship. There are also fraternities and sororities for African-American students.

With the realization that graduate education is much more than books and classes, diversity at Bowling Green State University is unique. Professional and personal growth are encouraged in the Graduate College through student organizations, activities, special programs, and a supportive University environment.

Bowling Green has articulated and implemented distinct plans to ensure a representative presence of multicultural personnel throughout the University. The Vision Statement guided by civility and serving the diverse and multicultural communities of Ohio, the United States, and the world.

A Project Search Newsletter is published annually to communicate with new and returning Project Search graduate students, graduate coordinators and the staff of the Graduate College. American Culture Studies, the Department of Ethnic Studies, the Women's Studies Program, and Communication Studies provide opportunities for students to teach courses and to conduct research in specific areas of diversity.

All undergraduate students complete a course promoting understanding of cultural diversity. The Department of Ethnic Studies provides leadership in implementing this requirement.

In addition, Bowling Green State University sponsors a significant number of special multiethnic speakers, artists and programs.

At Bowling Green State University graduate assistantships are available through every department offering graduate study. These departmental assistantships include an instructional, general, and non-resident fee waiver and annual academic-year stipend payments averaging $7,635 for graduate assistants at the master's level ($10,100 in selected areas in the sciences) and $10,740 for graduate assistants at the doctoral level. Stipends require students to provide 20 hours of service weekly throughout the academic year. Many assistantship positions offer experience in teaching undergraduate courses, although some are funded solely to conduct research. Other opportunities for financial aid include positions as residence hall managers, internships, and external grant awards.

Graduate student funding is available for a maximum of two academic years at the pre-doctoral (master's and specialist degrees) level and for a maximum of three to four years at the doctoral degree level. A maximum of five to six years of funding is available to assist students who complete both a master's and a doctoral degree at the University.
