The Program
The Department of Romance Languages of Bowling Green State University offers an innovative Master of Arts degree in SPANISH
which combines the cultural and linguistic benefits of study abroad with the guidance and academic support of our graduate
faculty at BGSU. Our program offers students a unique opportunity to pursue graduate study in Spain or Mexico, and on the
campus of BGSU over a two-year period. Those students selected to be Graduate Assistants receive substantial subsidies both
years.
Program Specifics Master of Arts Candidates pursue graduate studies in Spanish under one of the following two plans (students under both plans must also demonstrate
proficiency in the language): Plan I: Candidates must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate credit and the writing
of a thesis for which up to six semester hours of credit are granted. Plan I is recommended for individuals who expect to
pursue a Ph.D. degree. Plan II candidates must complete 36 semester hours of graduate credit. No thesis is required.
Both Plan I and Plan II students must complete 51% (19 semester hours) of their course work on the main campus at Bowling
Green.
All students (both Plan I and II) must complete a comprehensive exam during the first year. For students spending their first
year in Spain, the exam consists of a series of required courses with a comprehensive examination at the commencement of the
second year. For students in Mexico or on-campus at BGSU, it consists of a series of questions to answer at length dealing
with Spanish linguistics, Peninsular literature and civilization, and Spanish American literature and culture. While Plan
I students write a thesis during the second year, Plan II students present and defend a final project or paper (20 pages in
length or equivalent project) supervised by a member of the graduate faculty. Each student will present their project orally
to a committee of a least three members of the Spanish graduate faculty during the student's final semester. After the presentation
the student will respond to questions from the faculty.
Master of Arts in Teaching The M.A.T. is open only to applicants who have at least one year's teaching experience and valid certification from the state
in which they are teaching or have taught.
PREREQUISITES FOR GRADUATE WORK: Admission to graduate study in Spanish requires an undergraduate major or minor in Spanish (not less than 20 semester hours
beyond the intermediate level). Applicants with less background may be accepted, provided they are willing to make up prerequisite
deficiencies specified by the graduate coordinator.
CAREER PATHS:
Opportunities are available to graduates of the program in college and secondary education. Other opportunities abound as
well, and part of the program includes translation skills (Spanish to English and English to Spanish) on materials representing
a wide range of technical, professional, and business careers.
