STATEMENT OF GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM
MISSION STATEMENT:
The mission of the doctoral program in Leadership Studies is to prepare individuals for leadership positions wherein they
will transform the quality of education in K-12 schools, colleges, universities, or other human resource institutions.
ADMISSIONS STANDARDS:
Admission to the program is governed by the Division's graduate faculty and the policies they formally establish within the
frame of the regulations of the BGSU Graduate College. For applicants to be fully admitted, they must submit a completed Graduate
College Application Form, completed Leadership Studies Supplemental Application, official transcripts with at minimum a 3.0
from their master's degree program; GRE scores, four letters of reference, a personal statement with career goals, and a current
résumé. It is important that the applicant's career goals and professional interests be consistent with the purposes and intended
outcomes of this doctoral program. Based on the review of these documents, Leadership Studies faculty will vote to either
grant or deny an interview with the program for further consideration before final decisions are made to fashion the cohort.
Admission is highly competitive, and ideally only 13-15 new doctoral students are admitted yearly. Under special circumstances,
an applicant may be accorded conditional rather than regular admission to the Ed.D. Program. The Leadership Studies graduate
faculty will recommend regular admission to the Graduate Dean once the student has meet requirements as noted by the faculty.
Finally, a doctoral cohort is formed and each student will enroll in the core coursework during the Fall Semester of each
year.
ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF THE STATE/REGION:
The doctoral program in Leadership Studies at BGSU serves the state of Ohio as well as the NW quadrant of the state in many
ways. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of this program, our program covers many areas of leadership. With the cognate
area of the degree, students have the option for various disciplines on which to focus. Through the cognate, the program addresses
the need (for some) to prepare building or district level administrators for state licensure. In addition, for those agencies
and organizations who need leaders with a terminal degree, the program prepares such leaders who will enable these organizations
to attain specific goals and objectives as well as maintain their legitimacy within society.
PLACEMENT OBJECTIVES FOR GRADUATES:
The program in Leadership Studies prepares doctoral students for careers in academia as teachers and researchers, leadership
positions in K-12 and higher education, other positions in educational settings as well as leadership positions in human resource
institutions. Over the past 5 years, approximately one-third of the students have taken tenure-track positions at various
colleges and universities across the US, another third have taken leadership positions at either the building or district
level, others have taken positions in higher education. The final third have taken leadership positions in business, medicine
and other human resource organizations.
PROGRAM REVIEW:
The Ed.D. Program in this Division, along with other divisional degree programs, is reviewed regularly as part of the University's
Program Review process. After a statewide reorganization of doctoral programs in Educational Leadership, this program was
restructured and approved in 1997 by the Ohio Board of Regents. The next review is scheduled for the 2003-2004 academic year.
