Provides an introduction to instructional video production and principles for pre-service teachers. The purpose of this course is to teach the fundamentals of video production to students in the field of education. Students in this project-based course will learn basic skills such as video planning, filming, editing and publishing.

Blogs, Wikis and Podcasts, Oh My!: Web 2.0 for Teachers (3 hours)

Want to get an intensive introduction to the new Web technologies that are beginning to transform education? This course will not only teach you how to use the tools, it will also put you well on the way to implementing them in your practice. This experience is simply designed to remove the mysteries associated with recently developed Internet technologies such as blogging, wikis, swickis and podcasting. Educators who are keen to take their use of the Internet that one step further and make full use of Web 2.0 to support and enhance the learning experience for their students are heartily recommended to register. Topics covered will be Weblogs, wikis, podcasts, social bookmarking, photo-sharing, screencasts and more with a emphasis on the pedagogies required for successful use with students and strategies for beginning systemic change at your schools. You’ll leave with a slew of new skills and practical applications for 21st Century learning.

Technology on the Cheap: Open Source Options in Education (3 hours)

Would you like your students to have access to more computer applications, but budgets prohibit that access? Then say “hello” to the Open Source movement. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in. Applications, from word-processing and spreadsheets, to digital image- and audio- editing, are all available for Windows and Macintosh (and Linux) users at NO COST. This course will provide all students with The Open CD, a collection of some of the most-used Open Source apps available. The applications will be used to create a set of teacher/student example projects. Help to fight the digital divide! Come and explore the Open Source Initiative.

The Wonderful World Wide Web: Using Internet Resources in your Classroom (3 hours)

Yes, a virtual smorgasbord of “delicious” and “nutritious” options are available to teachers and students these days online. But how to you identify, evaluate, and integrate some of these wonderful web resources? This course provides strategies for classroom teachers, assisting them in targeting powerful Internet tools for teaching and learning. Specific web resources will be explored, as examples and starting points for teachers in math, social studies, language arts, science and performing arts to harness the marvelous World Wide Web.

You know that incorporating relevant visual, audio, and video elements into your teaching can enhance student learning; but how can you more effectively use digital multimedia resources in your classroom? Using tools such as scanners, digital still and video cameras, and digital media-editing software, this course will support your construction of media files that will directly integrate into your particular content area. Multimedia databases such as United Streaming, Flickr, and YouTube will also be explored. Don’t know a jpg from a gif? Various media file formats will be examined and processes for conversion/compression of these for use in presentations or websites will be highlighted.
