Reading Assistantships

What is an assistantship?
An assistantship gives graduate students the opportunity to work for the University while pursuing their Master’s degree. Assistantship opportunities are available through the Reading Program and usually require a student to work 20 hours a week as well as attend the Summer Literacy Institute and Graduate Student Orientation. Benefits include tuition waivers for the fall and spring semester, as well as a stipend for hours worked. No tuition waivers are available for summer.

What jobs do graduate assistants often hold?
Graduate students often have a mix of several responsibilities, some of which are described below.

Professor's Assistant
Professors are busy people! As a grad assistant working for a professor, duties may include teaching, grading, researching and more.

Graduate Reading Assistant
Grad reading assistants help the Graduate Reading Program in many ways, including website maintenance, data tracking, program recruitment, public relations, and more.

Reading Center Assistant
An assistant may be assigned to work in the Martha Gesling Weber Reading Center. The duties of a MGW Reading Center assistant change day to day.

Literacy in the Park Assistant
Every year, Literacy in the Park is hosted by BGSU. A Literacy in the Park grad assistant works to organize and run the event.

In Print Online! Assistant
In Print Online! is an online magazine which displays students' writings and illustrations. An In Print Online! grad assistant helps to create and publish new issues.

Literacy Serve and Learn Supervisor
Literacy Serve and Learn is a field experience partnered with an undergraduate education course (EDHD 2010). As part of the experience, groups of undergrads tutor elementary students in the Toledo Public School District. An LSL supervisor aides and supervises the undergrads throughout the field experience.

After School Tutor
The MGW Reading Center helps students who struggle in reading and writing. After diagnostic testing is completed, an after school tutor works with a student to improve their reading and writing skills.

Other
The needs of the Reading Program are continually evolving. Assistantship duties are assigned as needs arise.
