Early Childhood Education Generalist Endorsement for Grades 4 and 5

• Information:
  • The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement for Grades 4 and 5 is for teachers with an Early Childhood Education (Prekindergarten-3) license or teacher candidates enrolled in coursework to earn an ECE license The endorsement allows Early Childhood Education teachers to add grades 4 and 5 to an ECE license. The admission requirements for the courses include:
    • Current ECE license-holders must provide a copy of their valid teaching license
    • Current undergraduate teacher candidates must pass Block II methods courses with a C or higher before taking Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement classes. 
  • The ECE endorsement consists of five classes (15 credit hours). The courses may be taken at the undergraduate or the graduate level. For those taking the courses at the graduate level, a BGSU Certificate may be earned through the Graduate College. The five ECE 4/5 endorsement courses are:
    • EDTL 4500/5500: Teaching About Ohio and the Americas: Content and Pedagogy in the Intermediate Social Studies Classroom
    • EDTL 4501/5501: Upper Elementary Math Instruction
    • EDTL 4502/5502: Upper Elementary Science Instruction
    • EDTL 4503/5503: Upper Elementary Language Arts Instruction
    • HDFS 4504/5504: Development and Learning in Grades 4 and 5. 
  • Courses are offered in face-to-face and online formats.
  • To obtain the Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement for Grades 4 and 5, the applicant must pass all courses with a C or higher and must pass the Praxis II Content Knowledge Test (0014).

    • Once course requirements are complete, candidates will need to submit the following to the EDHD Office of Accreditation and Licensure:
      • An Ohio Department of Education Licensure Application
      • Associated fees
      • An official transcript of final grades
      • An official Praxis II score report confirming passage of the 0014 exam

    • What are the requirements for the Early Childhood 4th and 5th Grade Generalist Endorsement at BGSU?
      • Candidates at the undergraduate level must be pursuing a degree in Early Childhood and have passed the Methods semester of courses.
      • Coursework must be taken to prepare the teachers to teach in grades 4 and 5.  There are five classes that must be taken at BGSU to earn the endorsement. The classes are:

      • The Praxis II Elementary Education Content Knowledge Exam, # 0014 (paper-delivered) or # 5014 (computer-delivered)
        • Note that this exam covers the four core subject areas (math, science, social studies, and language arts) taught at the elementary school level.

    • Do I have to be a graduate of BGSU to take endorsement classes at BGSU and the graduate level(No.)
    • When are endorsement classes offered at BGSU?
      • Endorsement classes are offered both in the spring and summer semesters, according to the general format below. (No endorsement courses are offered in the fall.)
        • Spring semester:  All five courses are offered online during the spring semester.
        • Summer:  All endorsement classes are offered online, with some also offered face-to-face.  These courses are intense, since they are shortened to permit candidates to complete endorsement coursework in a single summer.
    • What is the cost of tuition for endorsement classes?  
      • Tuition changes yearly.  See the link to the Bursar’s Office for current tuition information.
      • Please note that financial aid is typically not available for endorsement coursework. A person must be enrolled in a degree-granting program to receive financial aid.
    • When are class schedules posted for spring and summer?
      • At about the mid-point of the previous semester: 
        •  Spring’s course scheduled is posted in October.
        • Summer’s course schedule is posted in February
      • Please ensure that you are searching for “Distance Learning” courses to see the online courses being offered.
    • How do I register for my courses?
      • You must be registered by the department for the Endorsement courses.  Once your have submitted the proper paperwork and have met the criteria for registration, we will be able to register you for your courses.
    • Once I’ve met all requirements, how do I go about processing my application for licensure?
