PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Rehabilitation Counseling Program (RCP) at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). The RCP is in the School of Intervention
Services. The RCP offices are located on the fourth floor of the Education and Human Development Building.
The mission of the RCP is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become highly functional Rehabilitation
Counselors through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experiences. The goals of the RCP are as follows:
- The RCP faculty will create and maintain a scholarly and rigorous academic environment that provides a solid and current foundation
for practicing rehabilitation counselors.
- he RPC will recruit, educate and graduate a diverse population of students who are skilled in rehabilitation counseling in
a variety of settings.
- The RPC will expose students to a variety of rehabilitation interventions, treatment settings, and persons with disabling
conditions.
- Students who have been graduated from RPC will be able to sit for and will have a high likelihood of passing the professional
examinations needed to work in the field of rehabilitation.
- Students who have been graduated from RPC will be able to attain and maintain, responsible employment in the rehabilitation
field of their choice.
- The RPC faculty will be seen as valuable members of both the local and national rehabilitation community.
- The RPC will work closely with public and private agencies to ensure well-trained graduates who are considered valuable employees
in those agencies.
At BGSU diversity is valued. Any unique contributions students can offer to the RCP are welcomed. Students are urged to take
advantage of the opportunities provided for self-exploration and growth. The RCP is developed from the belief that the process
of facilitating growth in others can occur only when the helping professional possesses a high degree of personal awareness,
an appreciation of diversity in others, and a desire to explore continued professional development and awareness.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The RCP at BGSU was founded in 1978 and has since awarded degrees to individuals who are now highly successful professionals
locally, nationally, and internationally. BGSU RCP graduates are immediately recognized as quality professionals. Private
practice, community and social service agencies, human development, disability management programs, and employee assistance
programs offer employment opportunities for rehabilitation counselors. Networking within the program, and with program alumni
provides valuable information on the best employment opportunities. Accommodations will be provided for any special needs
or disabilities identified by the student.
Application to the BGSU Graduate College (419) 372-7970:
There are two graduate admission categories, regular admission and conditional admission, and special standing status. A suggested
timeline for application is described in detail in the "Graduate Admission" section of the BGSU Graduate Catalogue .
Regular admission status is granted to those who have achieved high scholarship in previous academic work who show a strong interest in working
in the field of rehabilitation counseling. For regular admission a Grade Point Average (GPA) higher than 3.0 is expected for
RCP applicants.
Conditional admission status may be assigned to an applicant when there are deficiencies in the quality of work submitted. Students with conditional
admission status must earn a GPA of at least 3.0, with no grades below a B, in their first nine hours of graduate coursework.
At that time students with conditional admission status may apply for regular admission.
Special Standing Status (for advanced study) is a non-degree status. This status allows students to pursue professional goals by taking graduate
classes without enrolling in a degree program. Please see the BGSU Graduate Catalog for Special Standing application requirements.
Applicants are required to submit the following to the BGSU Graduate College:
- A completed graduate application for admission form
- Official transcripts from each college or university attended
- GRE Scores or TOEFL/MELAB scores (for Non-English speakers who have less than five years of residency in the US)
- Three letters of recommendation
- A nonrefundable application fee
Application to the BGSU Rehabilitation Counseling Program
Concurrent with application to the BGSU Graduate College, applicants should formally apply to the BGSU RCP. No specific undergraduate
degree is required. A prerequisite for admission to the RCP is acceptance to the BGSU Graduate College (see above). A personal
interview with the BGSU RCP Selection Committee will be periodically scheduled. Interviews should be arranged directly with
the RCP Director. Upon admission into the BGSU RCP, students are assigned a Faculty Advisor. Students must meet with their
advisor as soon as possible after admission.
In considering applicants, the RCP faculty reviews:
- academic performance and potential
- career goals
- personal characteristics
- previous work or volunteer experience related to the field
- unique individual contributions to the program
Once a maximum number of students have been admitted, other qualified students will be placed on a waiting list and will be
accepted on available basis. Early applications are strongly encouraged. Delayed response may be considered as declining an
invitation to enter the program.
GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS
Graduate assistantships are available through the RCP. These are research assistantships and involve working closely with
a professor of Rehabilitation Counseling or a related field. RCP Graduate Assistantships are an excellent way of gaining valuable
work experience and developing scholastic achievement. Graduate assistants receive a stipend and waivers of instructional,
nonresident fees for fall and spring semesters and automobile registration fees during the period of appointment. These fee
payments may also be extended as a professional courtesy for the following summer contingent upon availability of funds and
approval of the Graduate Dean.
INTERNSHIPS AND FIELD EXPERIENCES
Internships and field experiences are one of the major building blocks of a successful career in rehabilitation counseling.
Students are urged to choose internship sights carefully as many long term job opportunities originate here. Based on students'
financial need, internship and field experience hours may be exempted from tuition charges at the discretion of the internship
supervisor. That is, RCP students may not have to pay tuition for credit hours of internships when to do so would cause the
RCP student financial hardship. Twelve credit hours of internship are required by the RCP. RCP students who are able to find
work at paid internship sites also benefit from the income. A list of past and current sites at which RCP students have worked
is available from the RCP faculty internship supervisor. RCP students are urged to stay informed of community employment options
and consult with their advisor and internship supervisor about finding paid internships.

Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (PCC)
The Professional Clinical Counselor (PCC) license is the standard licensure for counselors who diagnose and counsel individuals
with mental or emotional problems in the state of Ohio. This license can be of benefit to RPC graduates who work in settings
with a focus on mental health. The PCC is widely recognized in a variety of treatment settings around the state. In Ohio it
is illegal for persons to diagnose or counsel persons with mental or emotional problems without proper licensing and supervision.
To date, the PC and PCC licensures are not recognized outside of Ohio. Requirements for counselor licensure vary from state
to state and there are few reciprocal agreements for licensure between states. However, PC's or PCC's who wish to practice
in another state might find that Ohio's fairly rigorous educational requirements have also prepared them to pursue licensure
elsewhere.
RCP students who wish to pursue PCC status will need to complete coursework in addition to the minimum number of courses that
is required for a Masters' of Rehabilitation Counseling.
