PROGRAM INFORMATION
The graduate program in Mental Health & School Counseling offers requisite awareness, knowledge and skills to assist BGSU graduate students in becoming culturally competent and ethical mental health or school counselors.
The graduate program in Mental Health & School Counseling offered by the School of Intervention Services at Bowling Green State University prepares individuals in the requisite knowledge and skills to assist themselves and others in personal development and in making decisions which lead to self-fulfillment in the personal, cultural, social, academic, and career areas of life.
The primary purpose of the program is preparation for counseling positions in community mental health agencies, hospitals, public schools, or other settings. It is also appropriate for individuals who want to apply guidance skills and techniques in the classroom or in other settings. The Master of Arts: Mental Health Counseling program is designed for students wishing to work in community agencies and desiring to meet the requirements for counselor licensure by the State of Ohio. The Master of Education: School Counseling program is designed for students wishing to work in a school setting. School Counseling students may take additional courses if they desire licensure by the state of Ohio.
The program consists of four full-time faculty who espouse diverse theoretical orientations. All faculty have earned doctorates and have obtained licensure in Ohio: two are Professional Clinical Counselors and two are Professional Counselors.
LICENSURE
Degree programs in the Mental Health & School Counseling Program at BGSU prepare a student to become a Licensed Professional Counselor and/or a Certificated Professional School Counselor.
LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR (LPC): The State of Ohio has established a process of licensure for persons desiring to provide counseling service in non-school settings. Students in BGSU's graduate program can arrange an academic course of study which will meet the educational requirements as Licensed Professional Counselor and entitle them to sit for the licensure exam. With an additional two 3000 hours of work supervision, they will become Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors
Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) may offer to individuals, groups, organizations or the general public counseling services "involving the application of clinical counseling principles, methods, or procedures to assist individual in a achieving more effective personal, social, educational, or career development and adjustment". A LPC may diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor.
LICENSED PROFESSIONAL CLINICAL COUNSELORS (LPCC) may offer the same services as above but may diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders without supervision.
PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELOR may offer counseling services in a school setting. The scope of practice for an Ohio Professional School Counselor includes assisting students, teachers, parents, and other educators in helping children learn.
