 A Cultural Study Abroad Experience in Jamaica

COURSE DESCRIPTION : (COUN 687) This is the inaugural study abroad experience for the Bowling Green State University (BGSU) Mental Health and School Counseling (MHSC) Program. It explores Jamaican culture and communication focusing on preparing students, educators, clinicians, and administrators in mental health and school counseling, rehabilitation counseling, school psychology, counseling psychology, clinical psychology, social work, college student personnel and related fields who can promote human growth and development in a diverse and global world. An emphasis of the course is increasing knowledge and skills in helping culturally, socially, and economically diverse populations and promoting their empowerment. Participants will take classes, engage in cultural immersions, mini internships, and field experiences to explore ways to provide leadership in counseling and related fields that promote issues of access, equity, and social justice in the United States and Jamaica.

Historical developments and the impact of change in the formation of Jamaican mental health and school systems is a major factor in the course. Participants will be exposed to different cultures and examine the effects of culture on (a) education/mental health and (b) global exchanges on mental health and school systems.

Participants should be familiar with or interested in the theory, philosophy, history, and/or administration of ethical counseling and helping services and supervision in the United States and Jamaica.

PRE-DEPARTURE: Prior to traveling to Kingston Jamaica, participants will attend five, 3-hour (9:30 am to 12:30 pm) pre-departure orientation sessions: January 18, February 15, March 21, April 18, and May 16.

COURSE ORGANIZATION : The course includes lectures and discussions emphasizing the effects of global trends on the Jamaican economy; a drumming workshop; religion and culture; family and gender; supervision; ethics and more.

MINI-INTERNSHIPS, FIELD EXPERIENCES, CULTURAL IMMERSIONS : Jamaican culture is rich and varied. Guided tours, field experiences, cultural immersions, and mini-internships include trips to Port Royal, Ocho Rios (Reggae Music Museum and Dunn's River Falls), Mico Practicing Primary and Junior High School, Hope Valley Experimental School, the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, the United Theological College of the West Indies, etc. These experiences will provide more in-depth knowledge about counseling, ethics, and supervision in a culturally competent context.

UNIVERSITY CLASSES : Classes will be conducted at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus. UWI is known as Jamaica's premier educational institution. UWI began at Mona, Jamaica in 1948 as a College of the University of London. It achieved university status in 1962. UWI has a strong emphasis on Caribbean issues making it an ideal educational institution for local and international students with an interest in Caribbean society. COURSE INSTRUCTORS : Course instructors include Drs. Sherlon Pack-Brown and Ja'Nitta Marbury and a host of guest lecturers from North America and Jamaica.

ACCOMMODATIONS : Participants will reside in a UWI hall of residence suite housing 8 persons (single rooms) with a kitchen and living area. All are expected to abide by BGSU and UWI Codes of Conduct . While enjoying personal freedom, you will discover a new culture by interacting with students, faculty, and administrators as well as local mental health and school counseling clinicians, administrators, theologians, and Jamaican citizens. Participants will experience the “real world in Jamaica” by tasting new foods, hearing and seeing new sights, and making new friends.

ESTIMATED PERSONAL EXPENSES: US $1,597
•   US $700 (Estimated round-trip airfare from Toledo, OH to Kingston, JA to Detroit, MI; rates subject to change due to tax structure and fuel surcharges; group travel arrangements established through Dr. Sherlon Pack-Brown)
•   US $300 (Estimated meals at $20 per day for 15 days)
•   US $500 (Recommended spending change)
•   US $97 Passport (If you currently do not own one.)

Note : In addition to paying the estimated personal expenses, participants must be admitted as a regular, guest, or non-degree graduate student at BGSU. Select and pay expenses for one of the following.

PAYABLE TO BGSU for OHIO RESIDENTS  
•  US $1,485 tuition (3 graduate credits)
•  US $1,207.54 (Accommodation, local transportation, and excursions in Jamaica)
•  US $22 BGSU, International Student Identity Card (ISIC)
•  Total expenses including estimated personal expenses: US $4,311.54

PAYABLE TO BGSU for NON-OHIO RESIDENTS
•  US $2,532 tuition (3 graduate credits)
•  US $1,207.54 (Accommodation, local transportation, and excursions in Jamaica)
•  US $22 BGSU, International Student Identity Card (ISIC)
•  Total expenses including estimated personal expenses: US $5,358.54

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE :
•   Financial Aid: Because the MHSC Jamaica program is a BGSU program, most financial aid that can be applied to study on the BGSU campus may be applied equally to study in the program abroad. Financial aid for study abroad programs is handled through the BGSU Office of Financial Aid.
•   Scholarship information is available for students from Education Abroad in the Center of International Programs or online at http://educationabroad.bgsu.edu/index.php?x=scholarships.
•   Academic Programs may offer financial assistance for travel abroad in the form of grants or scholarships. Communicate with your program coordinator, school director, or college dean.

PAYMENT DEADLINES : US $350 non-refundable deposit (for UWI and air transportation) is due no later than January 11, 2008. The balance of payment is due April 25, 2008.
