Mentors for Grants
Individuals who are new to grant proposal writing should find it advantageous to connect with experienced grant proposal writers. Most units on campus have in place a process for connecting new with established faculty for the purposes of guidance about the unit, its curriculum, instruction, the tenure process or general scholarship issues.
Utilizing a mentor is one way to improve your grant proposal writing skills and to increase the likelihood of success on early grant submission efforts. Specific roles of the mentor will vary with the stage of the grant –writing process and depending on their familiarity with the topic of a proposal:
- Moral support
- Answer questions about process / procedures
- Help think through the proposal development
- planning process
- brainstorming a problem (creative approach)
- helping move concepts to a action level
- considering evaluation / accountability mechanisms
- reading portions of proposal drafts for understanding (clarity, consistency, & feasibility)
- Assist with making university / agency connections
- Double-check key elements
- Problem-solving
