Scholarship in the academy exists to increase knowledge, to advance the acquisition of knowledge and skills by students and to promote the betterment of the community-at- large by improving and increasing access to the social, cultural and political outcomes of education. An expectation of scholarship is associated with all tenure track faculty lines at Bowling Green State University. A faculty member’s scholarship agenda reflects pursuit of his/her individual intellectual passion for an area of learning and so there is great and interesting individual variability in scholarship across and within academic disciplines at BGSU.
The faculty research and grants resources were commissioned by the Dean of the College of Education and Human Development (EDHD), Josué Cruz Jr., and designed for the purposes of furthering faculty efforts in scholarship. In particular, information and resources have been selected, described, and included to facilitate research and publication efforts and the identification, development, funding and dissemination of grant-supported activities and products. This guide provides a basic orientation to research practice at BGSU/EDHD and, in particular, to the benefits, utility and procedures of grant funded scholarship. It is divided into three sections:
- A general introduction to university and college resources
- Basic information related to EDHD college-wide policies and procedures:
- Tenure and Promotion Guidelines and Process
- Scholarship of Engagement Initiative
- Probationary Faculty Success Plans
Overview of the grant-writing process and specific information about resources and procedures along with general suggestions for approaching the acquisition of external funding.

Human Subjects Review Board (HSRB)
Tenure, Promotion and Reappointment (TPRC)
There are three documents at Bowling Green State University that provide guidance for faculty seeking tenure, promotion and reappointment:
- BGSU Academic Charter that can be found at the Office of the Provost website.
- College of Education and Human Development Tenure, Promotion and Reappointment Guidelines that are designed to assist faculty in preparing their credentials for review. (Incorporated within these guidelines are sections of the university Academic Charter dealing with faculty evaluation.)
The tenure and promotion document of the school or department in which the faculty member resides. Faculty are strongly advised to consult each document throughout their tenuring and promotion period.
Scholarship of Engagement (SoE)
BGSU has embarked on an initiative to foster and support Scholarship of Engagement (SoE) among its faculty and students. SoE is a collaborative endeavor of faculty members working with public and private communities to identify relevant problems related to economic development, educational reform and quality of life issues. The EDHD SoE Guidelines outline the College's commitment to SoE within the context of education and human development by defining SoE's purpose, characteristics, and expectations. A glossary of terms is included to assist the reader. Schools and departments are encouraged to incorporate the guidelines into the work of our various program areas.
Probationary Faculty Success Plans
The Office of the Provost at Bowling Green State University is in the process of implementing the Probationary Faculty Success Plan. The purpose of the plan is to assist probationary faculty in determining professional goals and designing, implementing and assessing a plan for their achievement. The questions in the handout from the Provost are designed to provide direction for both the faculty member and the unit administrator during ongoing discussions and planning over the course of the probationary period (school director, department chair and/or division chair). The format of the plan is under discussion at the university, college and school/department levels.
Human Subjects Review Board (HSRB)
The Human Subjects Review Board is the administrative and decision-making body having responsibility for review and approval of research involving human subjects. Before any research involving human subjects can be initiated it must have received HSRB review and approval. The activities of the HSRB are administered by the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) http://www.bgsu.edu/offices/orc/.
