Principles Applying to the University Mentor

University mentors should regard all contacts with the cooperating schools and the classroom mentor teachers as being of the utmost importance and should regard the educational welfare of pupils first.  They should never request nor maintain a student teaching/internship situation which fails to advance that objective.

The university mentors (faculty and adjunct staff) should work cooperatively with the schools to discuss and evaluate the student teaching/internship experience and should be assigned the specific function of:

  • A public relations emissary between the university and the cooperating schools.
  • An intermediary between the student teacher/intern and the classroom mentor teacher.
  • An individual mentor and teacher for the student teacher/intern.
  • An assessor and evaluator of student teacher/intern progress and development as evidenced in records and reports submitted to the Office of Research and Field Experiences.
  • A participant in planning and administering the student teaching/internship program.
  • The instructor of record to assign the final grade with input from the classroom mentor teacher.

The university mentor assistance should be:

  • Responsible, efficient, and cooperatively performed.
  • Frequent and adequate enough so that the classroom mentor teacher is able to feel secure in the proper development of the student teaching/internship program.  The university mentor will make the number of classroom observations necessary to aid and assess each student teacher/intern for whom he/she is responsible.  These visits should include an orientation visit, formal observations, and two evaluation visits. Each formal observation is to be documented on the appropriate form and followed by a conference with the student teacher/intern and, if possible, with the classroom mentor teacher.   A formal observation should normally last for an entire class period and can be scheduled or unannounced, as determined by the university mentor and classroom mentor teacher.
  • The minimum number of visits required of a university mentor is six for a sixteen-week field experience.

The university mentor should provide careful orientation for the student teacher/intern in his/her relationship with and his/her responsibility to the cooperating school and the classroom mentor teacher.  This can be accomplished by helping the student teacher/intern to understand:

  • The legal responsibility of the classroom mentor teacher.
  • That suggestions and recommendations by the classroom mentor teacher are supplied for guidance toward self-improvement.
  • That conferences and discussion sessions are to be expected and invited.
  • That lesson plans are to be prepared and made available for critique and suggestions prior to their use (at least several days before presentation, or at a time designated by the classroom mentor teacher).
  • That consultation with the classroom mentor teacher and discussion of problems arising in the classroom are to be arranged.

That professional conduct as a teacher in the classroom and about the school is expected.
