Field Experience Descriptions
Adolescence to Young Adult Education
Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Adolescence to Young Adult Education complete their methods and student teaching/internship placements in the same classroom over two consecutive semesters as part of the professional year experience. Students are placed in grades 7-12 and teach students in the content area in which they will be licensed. Current content area choices include Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Integrated Language Arts, Single Field Science (Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Physical Sciences-Chemistry, and Physical Sciences-Physics), and Dual Field Sciences (Physical Sciences-Chemistry and Physics, Earth Sciences and Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Physics, Life Sciences and Chemistry, Life Sciences and Physics, and Life Sciences and Earth Sciences). Student teaching/internship is a full-time, sixteen-week experience.
Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Visual Arts Education complete two consecutive student teaching/internship placements in area schools. Each experience last seven weeks and they are usually completed at both the elementary and junior/senior high school levels. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Field Experiences upon recommendation of program faculty.
Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Business or Marketing Education complete their methods and student teaching/internship placements in the same classroom over two consecutive semesters for a professional year experience. Methods experiences are completed in the fall and student teaching/internship experiences are completed in the spring semester only. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Field Experiences upon recommendation by program faculty. Student teaching/internship experiences last twelve to sixteen weeks, depending on the needs of the student.
All teacher candidates pursuing licensure in Early Childhood Education at BGSU will complete methods and student teaching/internship field placements during the professional year (typically the fourth year of the ECE program). During the methods semester, teacher candidates will be placed in a K-3rd grade classroom. During the student teaching/internship semester, teacher candidates may complete the requirements by:
i) remaining in the same placement they had for methods during the entire semester of
student teaching/internship,
ii) completing student teaching/internship in Rio de Jenaro, Brazil or Aldine, TX
or
iii) dividing the student teaching/internship experience between a pre-kindergarten setting (pre-K)
and a K-3 (setting).
Student teaching/internship is a full-time, sixteen-week field based experience.
Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Foreign Language Education complete their methods and student teaching/internship placements in the same classroom over two consecutive semesters as part of the professional year experience. Students are usually placed in a junior or senior high school to work with an experienced educator and learners in the target language (French, Spanish, German, Latin, Russian). Student teaching/internship is a full-time, sixteen-week experience.
Intervention Specialist/Special Education
Students pursuing licensure at BGSU as Intervention Specialists complete their methods and student teaching/internship placements in different schools over two consecutive semesters. Students are placed at different levels for their methods and student teaching/internship experiences since they will be licensed to teach learners with special needs in grades K-12 or PreK-12. Program instructor and the Office of Research and Field Experiences work together to arrange all methods and student teaching/internship placements. Student teaching/internship is a full-time, sixteen-week experience.
Students pursing licensure at BGSU in Middle Childhood Education complete their methods and student teaching/internship placements in the same classroom(s) over two consecutive semesters as part of the professional year experience. Students are placed in grades 4-8 and teach students in two content-area concentrations in which they will be licensed. Concentrations include Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Student teaching/internship is a full-time, sixteen-week experience.
With an additional six -nine hours of coursework and passage of the relevant PRAXIS II exam(s), students may also acquire the Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement. With this, students may add one-two licensure areas to their existing areas of concentration in order to teach them in grades 4 - 6. Endorsement applications may be obtained from the Middle Childhood Program Coordinator in 529 Education.
Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Music Education complete their choral, general music or instrumental student teaching/internship placements in an area school over a 15-week period. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Field Experiences upon recommendation of program faculty.
Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Physical Education complete their student teaching/internship placements in an area school over a 12- or 16-week period, depending on their concentration. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Field Experiences upon recommendation of program faculty.
Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Technology Education complete their student teaching/internship placements in an area middle school or high school over a 15-week period in the spring semester only. Students complete a methods experience at the same school in the fall semester prior to student teaching. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Field Experiences upon recommendation of program faculty.
