Meet the Problem

One morning when you go to class everyone is talking about the field trip to the zoo you took yesterday. You notice that some of your friends are not in class yet. When the teacher takes attendance you realize that five students are absent. This seems a little unusual but the teacher starts the day off as normal by collecting homework.

Later that hour your principal pokes her head in the door and talks to your teacher out in the hall for a few minutes. Everyone wonders what is going on. When your teacher comes back into the class she tells you that the school has received a call from the county health department. One of your classmates, Stephen B., was admitted to the local hospital through the emergency room along with two other students from other classes in your grade level, Virginia E. and Fredrick F. Health officials are concerned that their symptoms may be from a common cause. They are exploring a variety of possibilities and would like help from your class in determining if something during the zoo trip could be the cause.

Your Job Assignment

Since you were at the zoo and have a better idea of the activities that took place, the health department needs your help in tracking down possible culprits of the illness. You have been asked to act as an assistant environmental health investigator and sort through all the information you can obtain and investigate all possible resources related to the zoo field trip to see if you can come up with the potential cause of the mysterious illnesses.
