Investigate & Inquire

As a team of assistant environmental health investigators, you will investigate possible causes of the mysterious illness and inquire about the possible solutions to this problem. Start by reviewing the facts you know already and the questions you developed during Meet the Problem. Develop a research plan that allows you to divide up the work and to use your available resources (see below). Be sure your teacher approves your research plan, before starting.

To begin your investigation, download the Research Log or use a notebook to start your investigator's journal. Keep track of all the data you find, as well as information about where you find the data (source citation). The data you collect will become the evidence you need to prove your case; so be sure to keep clear notes.

INTERVIEWS

(Who can help you learn more
about the problem?)

There are a number of people in your school and community who are Germ experts! What could you ask them about diseases, transmission, and prevention? Talk with your teacher before arranging any interviews.

Some potential interviewees are:
School nurse, local doctor, custodial staff, cafeteria staff, health department personnel, etc.

BOOKS

Work with your teacher or your librarian to find books or periodicals that will further your research. You can also click on the link to the left to download a list of relevant books.

INTERNET RESOURCES

Use the internet to conduct your research and/or click on the link to the left to download a list of helpful Web Resources. (These websites were accessile at the time GermOdyssey was published; however it is possible that the sites have become inactive since publication.)

NEW INFORMATION

As you find new facts that relate to the problem, you can add these to your Setting Sail Worksheet OR you can keep it organized on your Research Log. Be sure to check in often with your group members to share the new information that you've collected. You will likely find that one question leads to many, many more questions! Follow your Research Plan, and ask your teacher if times allows for you to research new questions or ideas.

REVISITING THE PROBLEM

Once you have completed Investigate & Inquire, use the Revisiting the Problem worksheet above to summarize your research and reflect back on the problem you investigated. Your teacher may ask your group to share this with the full class.

Using the backside of the worksheet, explain your hypothesis about what you now think about the problem.
